A British TV channel has been fined £105,000 after it aired a live lecture by an Islamic scholar who allegedly advocated killing people who insult the prophet Muhammad.

Manchester-based station DM Digital, which describes itself as Britain's most-watched Asian channel, broadcast the one-hour programme in Urdu in October 2011.

The Islamic scholar can be heard telling his audience: "I hail those who made this law [Pakistan's blasphemy law] which states that one who insults the Prophet deserves to be killed – such a person should be eliminated."

Ofcom's English-language translation of his lecture suggest he also told viewers: "If someone takes a step in the love of the Prophet, then this is not terrorism."

On Friday, the media regulator said it had fined DM Digital £85,000 for airing the scholar's remarks and a further £20,000 for a separate programme. The channel has also been ordered to broadcast a statement by Ofcom.

Ofcom said: "The programme Rehmatul Lil Alameen featured a live lecture by an Islamic scholar, which included material that Ofcom considered was likely to encourage or incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder.

"This was because, on a reasonable interpretation of the scholar's remarks, Ofcom considered he was personally advocating that all Muslims had a duty to attack or kill apostates or those perceived to have insulted the Prophet."

DM Digital last May became the first UK broadcaster censured by Ofcom for airing material "likely to encourage or incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder".

The Manchester-based channel has previously been fined £15,000 in 2010 for airing "potentially dangerous" claims about the use of homeopathic medicines, and £17,500 in 2008 for broadcasting an advertisement "likely to exploit vulnerable viewers".

DM Digital had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

That;s refreshing! Glad to hear it....inciting violence is NOT "free speech."

As yet there’s no word of criminal charges against the individual preacher.

Good old British thinking.

What's the problem? They've been advocating this for years.

The TV station should be terminated

I agree with all of you. Britain has given free reign to muslim extremists for years. But anti-semitic mayors are never shut down (Hello London!)

Stan B - It's odd that there is no mention of criminal charges against the preacher and yet others (not of thisfaith) are punished for far less and with no religious connection.

I hope the fine was proportional punishment and that £100,000 is not just a drop in the ocean for the company.

The West is under the hold of political correctness among other things advocates that we get along even with those who are sworn to destroy us. Yes there are Muslims who are secular. However, the vast majority are too emotionally involved with ignorance to comprehend any advancement. people cling to the ideals of the past so this is not surprising.

Wow, I can't believe it. Throw them all out, and send them all home again. Can you believe we would do that in their country (ies)?

A drop in the bucket considering that if Britain is like the US and Canada; 80% of all mosques are funded by Saudi Wahhabi dollars. Who do you think is funding these jokers? Ten years to kick out one hate preacher? We need to change our laws so that anyone espousing terrorism or violence; financing or plotting to carry out said activities in any manner, shape or form should be prosecuted and after their sentence has been served; they should be expatriated back to their country of origin, of their parents' origin or their grandparents. If you don't like it here; there's the door. Do you need a little assistance getting through it? You give law abiding; hard working Muslims a bad name.

After studying their books, Quran, Hadiths, Reliance of the Traveller, I cannot call this ideology anything but a danger to humanity. The horrors that await females born into many Islamic run countries are well documented. Animal cruelty of the most egregious kind is not only normal but prescribed. Everything that Western thought holds dear, the innocence of children, compassion towards animals, acceptance of people's right to worship or not as they see fit, does not exist in Islamic societies. Every day in every way we see with our own eyes that this is true. When will the people of the West stop lying to themselves about this all encompassing cruel ideology that would have been best left in the dustbin of history?

Good! At least somebody reacted to their evil. I wish to God it would be reacted to over here, and I don't mean Muslims exclusively..

Barbara, I'm afraid it's mainly the US who hasn't smelled the coffee yet. Most of the Western World no longer allows anybody inciting violence under the guise off free speech. And I stress 'anybody'.

Lona, I want to make sure of what you are saying. Are you saying that the U.S. should throw out Free Speech if it offends someone?

Do you realize that in many European countries, non-Muslims can be and are imprisoned for simply quoting the Qur'an? If you are aware of this, do you think this is a good or bad idea?

Noted. Interesting; the UK's having a lot of problems with those who are actively violent Muslims. As far as the death threats? Well, we read in America about a kid being jailed for a stupid statement of violence that he clearly didn't mean as other than a wisecrack, and that's a sad thing we're struggling with. But the UK isn't the U.S.

Beth, I'm not saying that one can't offend. I used the term "inciting violence", which is also used by the courts to indict people. And these people may be either Muslim, White Supremacist, religious zealot... anybody who incites violence against others, race or creed is irrelevant. And I'm not aware of ANY European country where "non-Muslims can be and are imprisoned for simply quoting the Qur'an". Europe doesn't have a law system based on the Sharia.anywhere, so this is definitely not the case. If you are however referring to some right-wing extremists who have used these quotes in their propaganda material in which then people were called upon to harm Muslims, then you have a point. But these people were indicted because they incited violence and NOT because they "simply quoted the Qur'an".
