(I would not be a happy tax payer)

"Taxpayers have been left with a legal bill of £350,000 after Muslim parents went to court to win right to shave their disabled daughter's pubic hair.

The mother and father of the young woman, who cannot be named and is referred to as ED in court documents, said their daughter’s pubic hair should be removed in line with Islamic tradition.

But their local council, which has cared for their daughter since 2008, questioned whether the disabled woman had the mental capacity to consent to her hair being removed.

In 2011 the couple applied to the family court for their daughter, now in her thirties, to be returned home and raised the “stark” issue of her pubic hair being removed - leading to a long-running, £350,000 taxpayer-funded legal battle.

But the couple have now dropped the case at the last minute, leaving a judge at London’s High Court “utterly baffled”.

Mr Justice Roderic Wood said: "I thus remain utterly baffled by the course this litigation has taken, and perplexed by this lack of clarity in their case.

"Obtaining a 10-day slot of a High Court Judge's time is not easy, for there are many competing cases of equal if not greater urgency than this one."

The local authority involved had incurred costs of £138,000, the couple of £82,000 and the official solicitor, appearing for ED, of £130,000 - with the taxpayer footing the entire bill.

"This is an astonishing sum of money," the judge said. "Particularly when one considers...that the ultimate resolution is that the parents have, ultimately with their own 'consent', agreed to orders which dismiss any hope of ED coming to live with them and a significant reduction in her contact with them."

In the lead up to a final hearing, fixed for this month, "a great morass" of evidence was prepared, including 740 pages of witness statements, 300 pages of expert evidence as well as other documents, the judge added.

Unchallenged evidence from a cultural expert observed that "whilst there was a duty to remove pubic hair - both for religious and cultural reasons - there is an exemption for those incapacitated such as ED". "

What a wonderful thing to spend an obscene amount of taxpayers money on! :-p

How about spending this type of public/pubic money on the poor British soldiers coming back from putting their lives on the line in Afghanistan and are homeless?

This is an outrage. Political correctness, bending over backwards or pubicwards to make all the Muslims in the UK quiet so they won't threaten to behead or blow up people.

I guess you're ok with £350,000 of public tax money over shaving a Muslim pubic hair, Syd?

If you are, I think your sense of "worse" is disturbing. :(

Guess the news isn't your game. :(

Hey, Syd, stick around. Learn something about what wants to replace the West in its demographic drift...

Amongst elected politicians in the UK and many other countries law is the most over represented profession. Naturally lawyers will do everything possible to boost their income and that of their colleagues. One of the biggest law money spinners in this regard is anything that in any way may be even loosely described as "human rights".Tony Blair - a lawyer boosted his professions income no end with his introduction of the EU HR laws when he was the prime minister.

I thought this was a joke when I first saw the heading. Looks like the only joke is Syd.

Syd, you're a very busy girl! Popping up all over Care2, on any given thread on any given topic. Everyone certainly has the right to an opinion and to post it, but the only opinion you seem to have is that anyone you disagree with is an ignorant, hard-hearted, closed-minded example of what you think is wrong with society ~ which seems to be just about everything.

How can anyone defend this insanity and blatant waste of public money? What is it with a religious organisation having such an obsession on female genitalia? Why are the courts even entertaining this bizarre case?

I wonder if Muslim men have to get the hair removed from their reproductive area?? Yes, all extreme religious groups seem to have creepy ideas about all things sexual.

Good question, Patricia. I think we all know the answer apart from Syd who might be " Brazilian."

Robert O.,

It is the habit of some to projects one's own thoughts onto others. This is not my objective. My objective is to make people aware of what's involved in this ideology. I have never advocated violence. I advocate knowledge and working together by being informed.

I do, however, wonder about you.

I have read, BTW, that this generation's (non-Muslim) youth is very creative with shaving designs in that area. There's a whole website, the only picture from which that I could use for the artwork for this article that was merely suggestive. The other ones were much more direct and not at all appropriate for Care2. Always amazes me the kind of things people do with their bodies and time....

At the costs of 1000 pounds per hair, this is an expensive pubic hair shave ;-)! Why the hell do they allow those Muslims in Great Britain to abuse the system?! Are they suicidal? If those Muslims want to impose their sharia laws, let them go back to their corrupt Muslim majority counties that they escape to survive....either shape up or ship out! Islam has not place in ANY country that respects liberty, justice and human rights. Enough is enough! Let Muslims pay for their own customs of shaving pubic hair not public...this is PUBIC and NOT PUBLIC ;-)!

I didn't know muslims originated the bikini wax craze. Do they do a total shave or just a mohawk?

Hello!! Don't we have more serious things to take to court? Why did the parents put her in care if they wanted to dictate her care? I think that there are certain things that are important to certain people, but this doesn't seem that important. It may be the requirement of the religion, but with the lady being handicapped and in care and not too likely to marry, why was this so important?

Who was the solicitor that put forward this stupid case?
This couple have made fools of the system because no-one dared tell them, 'Go away' in case the religion/racist word came up. Wimps whoever let this through to the High Court or anywhere close.
Rap the knuckles of solicitors and lower courts ... make sure the couple/parents pick up the bill even if they paying a few pounds a week for rest of lives.
