This is old footage of Koko the gorilla loving and caring for a pet kitten...and then crying whenever she finds out the kitty died. If anyone says animals don't feel emotions, show them this.

Oh Gillian this broke my heart!

So much love between two different creatures one so large, and one so tiny. Poor KoKo and poor Ball getting hit by a car.

Yes, as described, this is VERY old footage. Koko has taught us a lot about the inner-workings of a gorilla mind.

Interestingly, even though she "chose" a mate for herself...to my knowledge they've never bred.

AND...gorillas, being one of our nearest relatives, have a brain evolved to contain social emotions.

BUT...this doesn't mean that non-primates share those same capabilities. There's a LOT of anthropomorphizing going on here at Care2--we need to be careful to NOT put human emotions into animals' heads. They don't belong there.

Amazing to see such a huge creature being so gentle with a much smaller one. Koko is an amazing animal. She has more compassion than many people I know.

I THINK ANIMALS HAVE A LOVE IN THEIR HEARTS THAT SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING. THEY ARE NOT FULL OF HATE AND ACRIMONY LIKE SO MANY HUMANS. THIS IS SUCH A DELIGHTFUL STORY, THANKS GILLIAN.

Noted! Oh how this breaks my heart because I remember this story so well and how she mothered that kitten, she lost her child. And you are so right, anyone who for one minute does not think these animals don't have emotions is because they themselves are void of them.

If you've ever had a pet, you know animals feel love, anger, loyalty, empathy, excitment, eagerness, loss... the same emotions we feel. Emotions are the same in infants and adults, the bright and the mentally challeneged, and are not limited to one species.

Pam W. I sure hope you are not one of those who believes animals have no feelings?

ALL animals feel pain and joy just like we do and all want and deserve to live. That includes cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys sealife, etc. We aren't put on this earth to eat animals, use as entertainment or to experiment on. We are here to help and learn from animals. We are doing a very poor job of this. Now back to the video, this breaks my heart but how did the kitten die? My audio isn't working. If KoKo killed it, is it a good idea to give Koko another? The death of the kitten really concerns me. There should not be a reason for it in this compound.

of course animals grieve over the death of their kind...elephants, dogs, etc
I wonder about people who kill...whether out of rage, or during warfare. What part of the human heart dies when that final act is committed? Would that fit into the category of "not capable of feeling"? Is that what makes us human...or not?

How very sad. Am not sure on the back story, or why Kokomo is in captivity, but I wish she had more space to roam, or be free...

It kills me to think what we do to primates in "research" and how we keep them in cages. What a f**king shame.

Sweet, sweet Koko. I must admit seeing how gentle and loving she was with her pal and than to see her cry over her tragic loss tore me up. I would love an update on how Koko is doing and if she got a new kitty?

On the thread of animals having "feelings" - Many years ago I was fostering a cat from the local humane society. I was in serious pain and very ill one day, and the cat would not leave my side. She kept licking my face and showed "concern" for me. Whether or not it was "feelings", the cat certainly was attempting to care for me.

I know animals havefeelings. My dog did. I saw a hippo savean antelope from crocidile, then took the antelope's head in his mouth and breathe kinda like mouth to head and the antelope recovered. Amazing how animals have feelings.

All animals feel just like we do, all deserve to live just like we do.

This video made me cry.

Noted with thanks Gillian. Why would anyone be amazed that animals have deep feelings of happiness and sadness, grief and sorrow just as we do? We have thought for far too long that we are so superior in our human form.
