In a truly shocking case in Pakistan, a woman has spent four years in jail after being sentenced to death for blasphemy. Her crime was drinking a cup of water while believing in the wrong religion.

Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian and mother of five children, was sentenced to death in 2009 for drinking from a well which was used by Muslim women. In a section of her book with French reporter Anne-Isabelle Tollet Blasphemy: A Memoir, reprinted in the New York Post, she wrote that her troubles began when she went out to pick falsa in a field for 250 rupees. She was given a larger bowl than her Muslim workmates, and after becoming exhausted she decided to drink from the nearby well. This caused other workers to accuse her of dirtying the water, and subsequently she was accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad and attacked when she tried to defend herself. After she refused a request by the local imam to atone by changing her religion, she was placed in jail.

The New York Post, in its reprint, further noted that “Embarrassed by Bibi’s case but still refusing to release her because of angry protests by extremists, the Pakistan government has transferred her to a remote prison, hoping the 42-year old dies quietly behind bars…already two government officials who have spoken out on her behalf have been murdered.”

The Pakistani government has an obligation to protect its religious minorities and stand up to fanatics who pervert Islam to justify discrimination. By signing this petition, you will demand Pakistan release Bibi from jail and take measures to ensure her safety.

If Pakistan's "blasphemy laws" were about criticizing any person's religion, we would see Muslims locked up for criticizing Christianity. In fact, we would see the Qur'an locked up and executed for denying the foundation of Christianity:

Qur'an 4:157 - Jesus was not crucified
Bible and even secular sources - Jesus was crucified

Bibi correctly asked, what did Muhammad ever do for you?" Because the "Blasphemy laws" only work in one direction, she was imprisoned and faces death.

This is the Islamic "religion of peace" we hear so much about. Islam is intolerant, supremacist, oppressive and murderous.

"already two government officials who have spoken out on her behalf have been murdered.” '

This is why governments all over the world are treating Islam with kid gloves - fear of what will happen to them if they stand up to this new threat to freedoms of all kinds. Where is a Churchill when we need him? Obamaislama certainly is NOT him, he is a Chamberlain - the appeaser who almost lost all of Europe to the last Fascistic threat to all of our freedoms. Disgusting.

and this Islamic paradise ruled by Islam's barbaric Sharia law is also the country the UN ranks as the worst in the world for treatment of women! Worse than other Sharia paradises like Saudi Arabia, Somalia etc???

The majority of women in Pakistani prisons are there for having the offence of actually reporting their rapes - and under Islam's bigoted law, that makes her an adulteress unless 4 Muslim men can testify as witnesses to the rape or her rapist confesses. Fat chance in this Religion of Peace and Tolerance.

Where is the outrage?

Christians are in danger wherever there is an Islamic majority.

Hell, EVERYBODY's in danger with Islam.

Giving a cup of water to a thirsty woman would have been an act of kindness which would have exemplified in its simplicity the fulfillment of the two greatest commandments. Those are to do unto others as you would have it done unto you; love your neighbour as yourself.
Soon it will be done unto them and I have no empathy for those who are willingly ignorant and miserly.

Mohammed did not approve of coercion.Telling a women she would be freed if she changed her faith is similar to the behavior between Christian sects in the Middle ages.Of course, burning at the stake was the next step. They also used it against the Jews. So please don't say "what kind of religion is this?' It has a long and dishonorable history from Abraham onward and it attract desert hotheads. whether they are Tennessee tent preachers or Camels to Cadillacs crackpots. They aren't any different than Bankers ,Congressmen,or oil drillers. They tell a story that satisfies their pockets AND NEVER THE GOOD OF THE PEOPLE.

Signed. It is an uphill battle to get Governments like the Pakistani one to change and come into the 21st century. The west should stop sending aid until certain conditions are met - i.e freedom to practice whatever religion one chooses and emancipation for women. As an extra requirement - all rapists to be emasculated forthwith.

It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword by a famous somebody who probably never engaged in battle.

We, of Care2, may have neither pen (YAY!) for computers or swords but we do have voices:

Bass, Bass baritone, Baritone, Tenor, Countertenor, Castrati, Contralto, Mezzo-soprano, Soprano
mumbling, grumbling and mouthing. Together we make a grand, demanding chorus as we hold the voiceless ones in our trembling hearts.

We march together, demand together, and we are boots on the ground Rainbow Warriors.

I'm so proud of us!

Male voices

Bass baritone

Hopefully since the problems were local, and they moved her to a remote Prison, they will quietly release her so that she can be with her family.

How anyone could use "Religion," any Religion, to harm another is beyond comprehension. Who do they think made the water in the first place, and in what Holy book does it say that she was not allowed a drink of it? The water is not theirs to covet!

How could they take her from her children, and threaten her with death, when it is they that are breaking their own "Gods" Laws! It's nothing, but evil! :(
