Iran lawmakers passed a measure — in a bill aimed at protecting the rights of children, no less — that allows for men to marry their adopted daughters, so long as the girls are at least 13 years old.

Children’s rights activists are alarmed, The Guardian in the United Kingdom reported.

“This bill is legalizing pedophilia,” said Shadi Sadr, a human rights lawyer for Justice for Iran, a legal group headquartered in London. “It’s not part of the Iranian culture to marry your adopted child. Obviously incest exists in Iran more or less as it happens in other countries across the world. But this bill is legalizing pedophilia and is endangering our children and normalizing this crime in our culture.”

A court first would have to rule that such a marriage would be in the best interest of the child, on a case-by-case basis. Girls in the Muslim nation already can marry when they’re 13 years old, with the OK of their fathers. Girls who aren’t yet 13 also can marry legally but must obtain the permission of a judge. The union of stepchildren with stepparents is currently forbidden by law.

But this new bill would change that prohibition and give stepdads the legal right to marry their stepdaughters, with the judge’s permission, The Guardian said. It still needs the final stamp of approval from the Guardian Council, the country’s body of clerics and judicial officials in charge of vetting bills before they become law.

By way of comparison, the laws regarding male marriage dictates that boys must wait until the age of 15 to legally wed.

The Iranian news site Tabnak estimates that 42,000 children between the ages of 10 and 14 were married in 2010 — and another 75 children under the age of 10 were forced to wed in Tehran in that same year.

Why didn't Obama step in an help the Iranian people throw off this Islamic dictatorship? Because his best friends, the Saudis and their henchmen, the Muslim Brotherhood, do not back this revolution because the Iranians want to throw off the suffocating Islam itself, thus the Saudis and the MB fear if they succeed in their revolution and throw off Islam that other Muslims will see their chance to do the same and Islam will die the death it has deserved for 1400 years of murder and oppression. Too bad, this is the only Islamically oppressed land that really could use a helping hand.

This is a total disgrace and shows the true level of depravity of the mad Mullahs. I wonder how many thousands of unfortunate Iranian girls are going to suffer because of this new law in the future.

I know Muhammad did it, and he is "the perfect man" and his examples to be followed by Muslims, but you'd think people would come out of the 7th century mentality by now. Apparently, not.

Our giving Sharia and Islam the respect it does not reserve, not speaking up to its barbarism and intolerance, feeds this monster.

human rights abuses, especially towards women, are very low on western countries' political agendas.

Pam, the Americans have meddled all around the Middle East especially since the end of WWII. To start with it was to get the British out because America wanted the oil. It's called stabbing your ally in the back. I'm not saying having the British in was the best thing for the Arabs but the meddling and ongoing interference has caused many of the problems today.

Shame on the law makers ... but a bigger shame on those men who use that law...

I find it simultaneously amusing and appalling that so many Muslims LOVE to point to the West and call us decadent, yet they are BLIND to their own.

And too many gravely naïve idiots in the West are inclined to take Islamists at their very cunning and deceiving word.

This is so disgusting. It is such a shame that we are still fighting against stuff like this in 2013. Unbelievable. There is nothing acceptable at all about this, and I am sick of people using religion as an excuse for such atrocities. As long as this is allowed to continue, there is no hope for the human race.
