Gunmen from Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist group attacked the northeastern town of Bama on Wednesday, opening fire on a school, shooting or burning to death 47 people and trashing the palace of a traditional ruler, officials and witnesses said.

The death toll was confirmed by Lawal Tanko, the police commissioner for Borno state, which lies at the epicentre of an Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands in the past four and half years. Many more were wounded, he said.

He added that the assailants had also partly burned down the palace of the traditional ruler of Borno, whose kingdom was one of West Africa's oldest medieval Islamic caliphates.

"Boko Haram came in at about 4.00 a.m. (0300 GMT), just when we were getting ready for the morning prayers," said Bama resident Abba Masta, who lives near the palace.

"There was shooting everywhere and they set the palace on fire. Many died. Students had to run for their lives as they attacked the government girls college as well."

It was one of several deadly attacks this week.

On Sunday the Islamists killed 106 people in Igze village, according to official figures, making it one of their deadliest assaults so far. That prompted the Borno state governor to say the rebels were better armed and motivated than government forces.

"The senseless targeting of innocent civilians is unacceptable," U.S. State Department spokesman for Africa Will Stevens said in Washington on Wednesday, referring to the Igze attack.

"We encourage Nigerian authorities to investigate this heinous act and to hold accountable ... those responsible."

The military denied Boko Haram were better armed or motivated and said it was making progress, but that no country facing terrorism had defeated it completely.

President Goodluck Jonathan ordered extra troops into northeast Nigeria in May to crush Boko Haram, which wants to create a breakaway Islamic state in the largely Muslim north, but the offensive, backed by air power, has so far failed.

The militants have retreated into the remote, hilly Gwoza area bordering Cameroon, from where they mount deadly attacks against civilians they accuse of being pro-government, and are abducting scores of girls - a new tactic eerily reminiscent of Uganda's cult-like Lord's Resistance Army in decades past.

Earlier on Wednesday, Boko Haram fighters attacked the house of an army general in the village of Buratai in Borno state, killing a soldier guarding it, Tanko said.

He said General Umar Tukur Buratai, who is stationed in the southern Niger Delta, was not there at the time of the assault, which had inflicted "minimal damage".

Jonathan faces an election in a year, with Boko Haram's persistence as the number one threat to Africa's top oil producer fuelling criticism that he has failed on security.

Another day and another massacre by radical Islamists. They don't care who they kill or maim. They have no compassion or respect for anyone.

The only reason you are posting this is to advance your hateful agenda. You are using C2 and the people here.

Yea, that must be it Syd. It can't have anything to do with the fact that pious Muslims tortured and MURDERED 47 people including girls, right? Quite interesting that your attack is on G for exposing the murderous hatred of the pious Muslim group Boko Haram, and not on pious Boko Haram for MURDERING. It is clear what your position is.

Syd H: "Choosing Love over Fear, Compassion" presumably does not extend to the actions of the violent supremacist ideology you appear to support that engages in "opening fire on a school, shooting or burning to death 47 people"

"Protecting life against all possible dangers and keeping it safe is an issue agreed upon by all religions and is clearly stipulated in verse 4/29 of the Holy Koran: Do not kill yourselves or one another. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful," the committee, chaired by Professor Dr Farooq Hamada, said.

Beatrice, that is only if you are a Muslim, non-Muslims must be killed, enslaved or forced to pay jizya that is a tax on the right to live.

Syd, if this story offends you then I suggest that you talk to Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist group as they are the ones killing Christians, not me.

I would ask you how you would feel if that was your family being killed. If you don't mind Islamists killing your family then that is up to you, personally I object to this ongoing massacre of anyone who is not a Muslim. We cannot protect those that the Islamists want dead unless we make a fuss and force governments to intercede rather than provide them with arms.

Syd is a huge hypocrite!! She pretends to be so protective of women's rights and etc; and in the same sentence attacks those who stand up for them!! These Muslims/Islamists/terrorists are nothing but animals and I swear will never be humans in any way shape or form!

Carol, please don't insult animals. I do not know of any other animal that kills because of religion.

This is why Islam attracts the dregs of society -- all evil can be justified in the cult of Islam

@Syd H

“He added that the assailants had also partly burned down the palace of the traditional ruler of Borno, whose kingdom was one of West Africa's oldest medieval Islamic caliphates.”

They destroy everything of historical value. Then, when the evidence or proof is no longer present, the Muslims rewrite history.

At present, the Arabs are digging under the temple mount and intentionally destroying all archeological evidence of the Jewish presence in Jerusalem way before the Arabs arrived, conquered and began building the third Islamic temple on the Jewish Temple Mount in the mid 630s A.D.

The present day mosque and shrine probably represent the “Abomination of Desolation” mentioned in Daniel 11:31:
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. Dan. 9.27 ; 12.11 • Mt. 24.15 • Mk. 13.14

Daniel 12:11:
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate Dan. 9.27 ; 11.31 • Mt. 24.15 • Mk. 13.14 set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Matthew 24:14-24:
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 ¶ When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, Dan. 9.27 ; 11.31 ; 12.11 stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand,)

16 then let them which be in Judea flee into the mountains:
17 let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. Lk. 17.31

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 for then shall be great tribulation, Dan. 12.1 • Rev. 7.14 such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

The mosque and shrine represents Islam, deception, death and destruction. At present, the Palestinian Muslims are destroying true historical artifacts in order to rewrite Islamic history.

At a later day, the same mosque and shrine is the stage for the Christian antichrist (or an anti-Israeli Islamic ruler, known as the Islamic mahdi antichrist) when he blasphemes against to TRUE God and gives a global command for international Jihad. All non-Muslims will experience what these poor victims suffered. Our sacred landmarks will also be destroyed as well. All evidence of our cultural pasts will be destroyed!
