This is a terrible story to hear.
Grave implications for all people.

We must remember that this was in Texas where guns and hunting for sport/trophies are promoted reg. by their states politicans like Rick Perry to name just one. Racism is also on the rise due to politics,especially amoung teabaggers and other hate/white supremist 'gun toten' mindset groups, ...Combine racism with sport/trophy hunting thinking and it is no surprise that such events happen. Of course this is wrong on so many levels but unless the politicans...to name just one group of influential people, get a grip on their humanity/common sense/compasion ,for starters, I fear this is not going to be the last of this type of senseless/unlawful/sad slautering of a defenceless/rare/beautiful animal in our nation.

Oh Jae, I fear you are correct on so many levels! I don't 'hate' much, but I do hate the divisiveness that that plagues (especially) the Far-Right extremism, Religious fanatics, hate/white supremest 'gun toten' mindset groups that are a curse on the world.

Thank you for the forward, Barbara! This is important for people to know about! I can't imagine anyone with any conscience would not be angry about such senseless killing. We must DEMAND civility in our country and the world.

I am profoundly saddened and disgusted by this event.

It is curious to me that the mother was also killed. Perhaps it was simply so that they could get to the calf? Or perhaps by killing the mother, they hoped to eliminate the rare gene from the gene pool, ensuring that she would not bear another white buffalo calf? This would make the skin taken even more rare as a result.

I can see this as being purely economically motivated. Wasn't there someone in Texas selling hunting opportunities for white buffalo? Could they be responsible? Trying to "corner the market", so to speak?

I can also see this as religiously motivated hate crime. Kill the sacred animal, and kill the mother to deny the Lakota the blood line carrying the white buffalo gene.

Those responsible are utterly reprehensible, and deserve the worst that the law can throw at them.

This is horrible and from my understanding is that the tribal groups were not happy about the outlawing of their ability to hunt this particular animal. Therefore, I understand that these two precious animals were shot first by poisoned arrows which would indicate that a tribal member would be the first place where I would begin my search as well as the knowledge that this family was out of town at the time of the killings. So that to indicate the knowledge that this or these individuals are known by the family. It's just unfortunate that the possibility that someone within your own circle would do this and the family nit knowing who. But, I fully believe that justice is just around the corner and this case will be rapidly solved.

poor, poor defenseless baby. Bloody barberic "humans", always preying on peaceable creatures. Why wasn't this baby under 24/7/365 day guard???? He was the only one in 150 YEARS!, like finding the holy grail. I would think they would've gone all out to ensure his sfety, have him wear a camera, put him & his mom in a special pen, even donated him to a zoo for safekeeping, something, so te evil "human" trolls, couldn't do this to him. Imagine the baby's helpless cries. His mom was probably shot or poisoned. Stupid trolls & their senseless killing of all non exploitable creatures. H*ll, is on EARTH! There are "humans" as sadistic as any demon that could be dreamed up. ANIMALS FEEL! ANIMALS FEEL PAIN & LOSS! ANIMALS FEEL SCARED! This por baby, died in absolute terror! His mom felt the loss & sorrow her baby was gone. GO VEGETARIAN so no animal has to feel these things! In the dairy trade, zillions of NEWBORN calves are left to die, or killed. If they're kept alive, they're force fed, tormented beaten & thrown around EVERY YEAR. A dairy cow, loses ALL of her children so people can drink her milk.

I remember with great fondness my putting the story on of it's birth. There is a great sickness in the human species, this is another example of it. All life is sacred, all bison are important, but the significance of this particular bison was well known, which makes the whole thing that much more sad.

If humans do not get their act together then there will be no more human kind or very few will be left to make a start over, if Great Spirit allows a start over. Our Earth Mother may just be content to have all other species on her that work within the balance, the humans certainly haven't.
