Two cows which have lost their grazing field to Crossrail works are due to be slaughtered after Government officials ruled they could not be transferred to a Norfolk animal sanctuary because they don't have a passport to travel.

Almost 14,000 people have signed a petition to save Lloyd and Leila a bull and a cow but the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) has refused to allow them to make the 120-mile journey from Stepney City Farm in London to Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

Officials say they are unable to make an exception for the cows, even though they will almost certainly be heading to the abattoir after the city farm said they were unable to support them any longer.

So this is actually horrible news--they're not going to the sanctuary at all. Confusing. I hope they can be saved. Thanks Borg

They are not going to the sanctuary Yet.. They have been saved from slaughter & the sanctuary has offered a place & offered to transport them there.Lets hope Mr Fitzpatrick & Hillside can convince DEFRA to do the right thing.

We are very grateful to Jim Fitzpatrick MP for his continuing efforts on Lloyd and Leila's behalf to persuade DEFRA to allow them to be moved to Hillside Animal Sanctuary. Even though they have now tested negative for TB, it now seems unlikely that DEFRA will grant a temporary movement licence and Mr Fitzpatrick is now submitting an urgent application to the European Commission in Brussels. Stepney City Farm, who presently own the cows, are very keen for them to come to Hillside and we would like to thank them for their patience while the appeal goes ahead. Thank you Borg. No animal deserves the agony of being slaughtered.
