We've just heard that Stepney City Farm have now killed Lloyd and Leila, the two friendly pet cows that we had offered a home to here at Hillside Animal Sanctuary. Very Sad News

Ahhhhhh, I am so angry and upset, I HATE Defra, they did the badger cull, and now they would not issue a passport to move to healthy bulls, who are film stars and free from TB!! To a sanctuary who wanted them. I really hate DEFRA, and have emailed them to tell them too.

Life sucks........

I am so sad and upset.

Thanks Borg

Very sad and upsetting. I really believed they were going to be saved and was shocked when I read the news this morning. So wrong and so unfair.

Stepney City Farm is to blame for this, they didn't even wait for a reply from DEFRA.
I will be sending them my mail too.

i read everything you sent BD & it seems all the volunteers did their utmost in caring & trying to save them. They died due to stoopid red tape, they didn't have a passport, how ludicrous!

Such beauties, this breaks my heart and infuriates me. What is wrong with this world, killing innocent animals. People that kill better pray they don't reincarnate as an animal. Karma is a bitch.

I am speechless at the moment, deeply saddened, and really beyond words for the rotten low life scum that are like a plague on this earth.

Here is the message I sent to the two addresses above:
Re. the case of Lloyd and Leila.

Your behaviour has been SHAMEFUL and DISGUSTING.
People like you do NOT deserve to be part of the European Union.

I agree with Borg and Caroline. I have read every piece of info I can find on this and that farm is a working farm and wanted younger animals apparently. They say they had no room to make Lloyd and Leila's lives happy and it was difficult to TB test every year, but I doubt that is the real reason. We have rescue cattle and no passports and they are TB tested every year. It costs nothing as there is no charge for Ministry testing. The passport issue only rears its head if they were to be wanted for food and one of ours is Scottish Highland aged 23 years and they would never be in the food chain. The Statement issued by Stepney Farm just doesn't make sense and I read every word of it - truth seems to me they just didn't want them.

Oh... I forgot to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to the people of Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norwich. I studied there at the University of East Anglia and they are all in my best memories and in my heart.

My Email to Stepney City Farm:

“There was a slim chance we might have been able to move the cows,” . “It’s a shame the farm pre-empted any EU ruling instead of seeing it through.

“Lloyd and Leila were the most famous cows in country—but the farm has turned it into PR disaster, clutching defeat from the jaws of victory.

“This was a short-sighted, senseless waste.”

I am utterly disgusted and saddened by your lack of fight for Leila and Lloyd. They had a chance, a hope, a shimmer of light in sight, but no, you just gave up on them and shipped them off to the slaughterhouse. You don't deserve any animals, as your heart is just not in it for them.
I sure won't be sending any donations to you.

They replied straight away:

Dear Ms Jones

We are a small charity that operates a working farm in a deprived community in the east end of London. We are open 6 days a week, free to visit and welcome all.

In short, it was not legal for us to move the cows to the sanctuary offered and there was no possibility of getting an exemption to the law. We had been trying to persuade DEFRA for 4 years and both DEFRA and the Minister gave us a very final refusal. We have explained in our statement that we had taken legal advice and there was no prospect of a successful 'appeal' to Europe. Mr Jim Fitzpatrick MP has acknowledged this.

Moving them was by far our preferred option. We had worked hard to re home them for five years, including petitioning the Secretary of State.

A full statement is available on our website:

Kind regards,

As i previously volunteered at Edinburgh City Farm, I know all too well the political BULLSHIT that prevents them from doing what's right..... Lloyd & Leila now Join 'Toby' in a place better than earth.

Thank you Marie for your report & your strength to fight for these animals.
