So here we are, celebrating the holiday that for many signifies the end of another summer, a last gasp before school starts and folks start buttoning down for the cooler nights ahead.

While most people are on the lakes or in the parks, what's left of South Central Wisconsin's labor movement will get together at the Labor Temple on South Park Street to celebrate the contributions that union members have made and continue to make to our society.

There'll be plenty of entertainment, the good old-fashioned bean feed, games and face painting for the kids, and information booths set up by many of Madison's worker-friendly organizations. From noon to 5:30, the party at the Labor Temple is always a festive affair. Politicians come to hobnob, old friends share memories over a couple of beers and the camaraderie is endless.

But there will be a cloud over the celebration of workers' rights that this day is designed to recognize. Many of the public employee locals, thanks to a governor and Legislature that don't believe workers' rights need to be safeguarded by joining together in a union, are mere shadows of their former selves.

The union movement has been responsible for building the middle class, which as union strength diminishes is suffering too. What many of the anti-union zealots don't recognize is that if working stiffs don't have the wherewithal to buy a washer and dryer or a new car every so often, the entire economy suffers.

They won't be dwelling on that at the Labor Temple today, though, because this is a time to celebrate what you have, even if isn't much.

Join them for a good time.
