Ezra Klein has a post up about recognizing that whatever the intention behind the killing of civilians in the Israel/Palestine conflict, it is overwhelmingly Palestinian civilians that are being killed.

Footnotes:

[1] [W]hat are the official open-fire regulations? In December 2004 MK Zehava Golan (Meretz) addressed Security Minister Shaul Mofaz and proposed that written open-fire regulations be distributed to the soldiers, as was done in the past, “so as to ensure that an oral tradition not develop.” At the beginning of the year came a reply from the office of the army’s High Command: “Due to the changes that are made to the open-fire regulations from time to time, and due to the differences between the sectors, we find that to bring the regulations to the knowledge of the soldiers in the form of a booklet as in the past is not efficient and may even cause mistakes. Therefore the distribution of the regulations will be carried out through the commanders.”

This explanation met with a different reality, in which many “mistakes” took place, as combat soldiers in elite units are beginning to reveal. The soldiers who were interviewed for this article emphasize that the regulations were made judiciously, not under pressure, and were transmitted only orally to the level of the troops. Sometimes their meanings were changed on the way down. “It is obvious why the IDF refuses to publish the regulations in writing, opines Avihai Sharon, 24, until recently a sergeant in the Golani Brigade. “Nobody could openly stand behind some of them, which became routine in all the sectors. That’s too bad, because according to the declarations, the army is interested in preventing harm to innocent people. Transparency could reduce harm. At least it would clarify what is forbidden. Among us in the Golani, no one knew, and regarding our routine practices for opening fire, to call it the Wild West is a big understatement.” (link)

[2] Israel Zangwill noted as early as 1904 the tendency among Zionists to evade the question of what they planned to do with the overwhelmingly non-Jewish majority in Palestine: "There is ... a difficulty from which the Zionist dares not avert his eyes, though he rarely likes to face it. Palestine proper has already its inhabitants. The pashalik of Jerusalem is already twice as thickly populated as the United States, having 52 souls to every square mile, and not 25 percent of them Jews; so we must be prepared either to drive out by the sword the tribes in possession as our forefathers did, or to grapple with the problem of a large alien population, mostly Mohammedan". From a speech given in New York in 1904, reprinted in Israel Zangwill, The Voice of Jerusalem (London: William Heinemann, 1920), p. 88, quoted in Hani A. Faris, Israel Zangwill's Challenge to Zionism (source).

[3] "We have no solution, you shall continue to live like dogs, and whoever wishes may leave, and we will see where this process leads". (link)

[4] "You don't simply bundle people onto trucks and drive them away ... I prefer to advocate a more positive policy ... to create, in effect, a condition that in a positive way will induce people to leave." Ariel Sharon, quoted by David Bernstein in Forcible Removal of Arabs gaining support in Israel", The (London) Times, August 24, 1988, page 7. Cited in Imperial Israel And The Palestinians: The Politics of Expansion, by Nur Masalha; Chapter 2, footnote 117.

"Genocide" is the only word that fits,
when we're talking about what the Israelis
are doing to the Palestinian people.....and
I know how badly the "G" word will piss off
alot of people. But, I don't care if people
get pissed off. The truth is the truth.
What I will never understand is how the Israelis
can commit genocide when they themselves were the
victims of an attempted genocide 70 years earlier.
That is what pisses ME off!
Thank you, Pete!

The whole article is a fake, because Arab and Jewish citizen of Israel live in peace with each other. Even in West Bank under moderate management of Abbas, is not at war with Israel.

Only Hamas calling for Israel elimination and genocide of the Jews is guilty in those deaths. Not Israel, not USA. Only Hamas with its murderous ideology.

I care about women and children [and men] being targeted...the innocent ones...the ones in Israel that are having rockets and mortar shells lobbed at them...I have no concern for the Hamasholes and the Palestinians that allow these terrorists to live among them and lob the rockets and mortar shells into Israel. The Hamasholes want the Palestinians to keep dying so Israel can be blamed. The Hamashole supporters of the world just keep blaming Israel for defending itself... The best way for me to sum it up is the following:

If the Palestinians want to keep allowing these terrorists to fire into Israel from within their borders, the consequences are theirs to suffer. I don't feel sorry for people who choose to do something wrong and then get hurt by it/the consequences of it.

The Hamasholes keep [trying] to use the Palestinians to bring blame on Israel when Palestinians get hurt from the actions of the Hamasholes that the Palestinians are allowing to remain within their borders. If having the COMMON SENSE to realize that is too much for the Palestinians, then they really do need help and can't possibly take care of themselves and the Useless Nations (UN) organization should step in

When Israel and Israeli apologists stop playing the victim and start to recognise the truth in what Israeli zionists are doing, ie, killing innocents and making their lives misreable by occupying and not giving them the same rights as Israelis then they will recognise that Israel is assulting the Palestinians, that Palestinians are the victims. To use Hamas as an excuse, is just plain ridiculous. Israelis and their supporters must take responsibility for causing human rights violations very deliberately.

Josh, no one could possibly take
you seriously as long as you use an
Israeli flag for your avatar. You are
as biased and one-sided as I would be
if I used a Palestinian flag for my avatar,
or if I were a Palestinian by birth.
I am against the killing of humans, whether
they be Israeli, Palestinian, or any other
nationality or race. Israelis are not any more
entitled to life than anyone else on this planet.
Israel has cast it's fate to the wind, after what
they did in Gaza last December. People all over
the world are now rightly seeing Israel as not-much
different than Nazi Germany, or Pol Pot's Cambodia,
in the way they are genociding the Palestinian
people. It is way past time for Israel to be
internationally shunned by every people, government
and state in the world, for as long as they seek
to kill Palestinians, simply because they are Palestinian.

Edward, Edward. And you were doing so well too. OK, we'll try one more time...............

You felt that these words were akin to blaming "women that dress too provocatively" and children that are "too cute" as being the cause of being raped. It was a moment of candor that was frankly, breathtaking.

Alas, this is not group therapy, it's Care2. Grow a pair and take responsibility for yourself or stay in denial of what we all know now of your glimpse at the truth. I cannot over-emphasize this point; with this self knowledge you will never be the same. You are now at a crossroads and you have to choose to accept the truth you have seen to be self-evident or stay in denial and sickness. I will pray tonite for your friends, family and everyone you come in contact with, that you choose what you instinctively know is right. I pray for them because they will bear the brunt of your sickness. Peace to you and yours.

Tim, I am a proud Israeli supporter and love freedom, democracy and the right of Jews to have their state in the homeland of Jews, in the Land of Israel in Palestine.

I am also against murdering civilians on both sides. The world looks at Hamas as at genocidal murderers because they want to eliminate Israel. I agree with the world.

At a time when Israel has Arab MKs, there no groungs to talk about "Genocide" or "Holocaust" or "Apartherid" against Arabs, because it doesn't make sense.

You could put the flag of future Palestinian state for your avatar - it will be honest too - your choice.

Locan,

Pray not for me, but for thee...you like to play with words and have no comprehension of what I have said...you seek only to defame and belittle...alas, here are my words from the quote you propose:

"Well, you do get to pick and choose what you want to believe. I don't personally get your connection [if I am understanding you correctly] between three thousand innocent people dying in the WTC Murders on September 11, 2001 and Israel defending itself. Tell me, do you believe that women that get raped deserve it because they dress too provocatively? Or do little children deserve to be molested because they are just too cute? Or puppies and kittens drowned because they are born? Etc.? I'm just curious as to where your victim blaming line ends..."

The comparison was between Israel responding to the mortars and rockets...Israel in contrast to the woman being raped, etc., the mortars and rockets in contrast to the rapist, etc., and Israel defending herself and a woman defending herself, etc.. Sorry it was so hard for you to comprehend...hope this helped...

Defame? As far as belittling, you brought that on yourself. I have only illustrated in very plain terms that there is two sides of this story involving two (three?) traumatized nations. You have left no doubt that Pro-Zionists are inherently racist. You believe your better humans than other inferiors. Good luck with that.

Both are murdering each other. This is an ongoing battle of wills, arrogance and selfishness. This is why I will always have a problem trying to understand why it is that either have survived as long as they have. Both are practicing genocide and have for years. No one sufferes but theinnocent, and the innocent are those that cannot defend themselves against belief systems that cannot even practice what they preach within their own faiths. But they sure can slaughter one anothers women and children. Both are guilty...

Pete...The article is educational and enlightening. I have problems with anyone who discounts death of anyone, including those that believe their faith is the "might make right" argument.
The world is a violent place, and it should not be that way. I cannot for the life of me understand someones willingness to acknowledge murder. Death is death, and the guilty parties will forever claim their innocence. and for what? The right to claim their right?
I think that until everyone can sit down and have a heart, and ear and the willigness to say: "I will take my toys and war weapons and go home, and fight no more forever." Nice thought I know...but I get weary of the It will never happen attitude, and still hope for possibilities.....and there is always possibilities....the what ifs...

"A proud Israeli supporter"......
regardless of the actions of the
Israeli Government? Or, are you
saying that the Israelis have the right
to genocide, because of the Holocaust?
That seems to be Israel's justification
for the crimes they commit.
Israel has NO right to exist as a state in
Palestine; they stole the land! To this day
it does not belong to them, never has, never
will. Show us some intellectual and historical
honesty, and admit they stole the land in 1948.
