If you're looking to declutter your home and simplify your life, if you're like me, one of the hardest areas to deal with is books: getting rid of old ones and cutting back on the expense of buying new ones.

Hey! Don't tell me how to deal with my books! My home is a library, and if keeping books I love is an ego trip, so be it! What about all those out there who fill their garages with luxury cars they may drive once a year? (I live in LA!) I know I may never take one of those old books down and actually reread it cover to cover. Some, like the works of Mme. Blavatsky or medieval treatises on music theory, you never really read for enjoyment. But they are a part of my work. I'm a writer, and I concentrate on keeping books that I probably will use in my work again - perhaps often. People don't understand: When I'm working, and come across the need to check facts, theories, or the latest discoveries for a book or article, I CAN'T take the time to hop in the car, drive to the UCLA library, find the books, photocopy the pages (at .16 per page!!!) and then come home and take up with my train of thought exactly where I left off. It just doesn't work that way!

If using book exchanges and throwing out former favorites makes you feel virtuous, Holly, then by all means do it. But don't get up on your high horse and try to convince others that your way is the only way.

ooh, I love this idea, thank you very much.
I have noticed that the library in the city where I live do not accept used books, they only want donations of brand new ones, everything new.

I don't buy books. I use the library. I view my record online, order and then drive up to the driveup window when they tell me ready for pickup. At work folks bring in books they want to get rid of and I have a spot in my office for "the library". When everyone has read what they want I donate them to the library. Children's books go an angel that takes care of the migrants.

Excuse me Mary D. but I just posted this news I didn't write it personally! I myself own a ton of books! I think it is a good idea to share and trade books with others! I buy books used whenever possible but sometimes have to buy new. I also find lots of books online for free! I am far from being on a "high horse" LOL Please take a chill pill...

Holly - I didn't know you had only posted the item! My apologies. When I moved recently, I got rid of books that I knew I would never read again, or had been given to me when I really had no interest in them. Also novels, when I had read them once and felt no desire to ever read them again. Still, I had a truckload! But I am still a hopeless bookaholic. One day, I will have a house with a huge room where I can keep them all! (Dream on!)

The best books are ones that are shared.
