Looking at the rolling fields and jungles of the Amazon, it is tempting to think that such a vast area has endless resources...

"Quite a few farmers who have devastated the jungle for decades - be it for wood or for opening up new spaces - are now trying to come up with sustainable activities..."

Amazon...endless resources....and soon we will sign petitions trying to save what is left.
Sustainable activities.............they knew it years ago when they destroyed the forests .........almost too late!

Who was the doofus who first took cattle to the Amazon?

I hope there's a sustainable way of living with the forest and not cutting it down -- no doubt the indigenous peoples knew the ways for centuries or millenia, long before the Amazon was turned into a "market" or "factory" to produce money.

They need to plant back what they have taken out... there are some areas for farming, some for cattle, but forests are best left alone...

This is so sad. Many of the rainforests plants can never be replaced or will take hundreds of years to reestablish. The rainforests are very intricate, delicate eco-systems. many plant species were destroyed that will never be known. It is heartbreaking to me. A dream I had as a teenager to study the plants in the amazing canopies of the rainforests all but destroyed as well.
Thanks Ben

Right, to "plant" a rainforest would take thousands of years.
I just found out that the Amazon River (Rio Amazonas) is eleven MILLION years old.
Think about it...
