Building Ban for Beijing Olympics

Environment  (tags: China, Pollution )

All building sites in Beijing will be shut three weeks before the start of the Olympic Games, as the city tries to clear its skies of pollution. The move follows mounting concern that athletes may suffer from Beijing's noxious atmosphere...

sadly there is not only air pollution that is "polluting" the country. I fear that most is going to be convieniently hidden from peoples eyes - yet again. The Olympic Games have become the biggest money making sheme there is. Too bad for the athlets.
Btw the Greek weight lifting team is not going to participate as it seems as they are dopped. The substance was found in a dietary supplement importet from China! They wanted to save money. Thing is that these substances can cause death and have so in lab animals. Death and agression.....BOYCOTT CHINA!

"When Beijing bid for the Olympic Games in 2001 it promised to provide a clean environment for the athletes by August 2008, when the Games open.
But James Reynolds, in Beijing, says the air in the city is often astonishingly bad and the city authorities have found this promise tough to keep.
Our correspondent says there are days when it is hard to see more than a few blocks away..."

I am amazed that Beijing was ever awarded the Olympic Games for a variety of reasons.. Someone was really not doing their homework there.

Just heard on the news today:

China is now NR 1 in pollution and has as such upsurped the USA.
China gold USA silver - a different kind of Olympics.

If I were an athlete I would not attend the Olympics in China for several reasons. 1. the air, 2. human rights, 3. animal rights, 4. Tibet rights, etc.etc.
A medal around my neck for years of preparation for this event is not worth the suffering China imposes on it's peoples and the rest of the world.Even athletes should have a conscience and stay away. It would be nice if the Olympics were just about sport but is has not been so for a long time and will not be again for a long time to come. The IOC has to be cleaned up before that happens and the athletes can make it happen by staying away. It's not too much to ask of the athletes in order to gain back respect.

After all the recalls just the U.S. has had in the last year (how many have gone unreported here and in other countries??!) I cannot believe that they still are allowed to hold the Olympics. Not to mention the other things that Lee D. listed. And Isabella, maybe holding a 'mock olympics' for world polluters would be something interesting you could organize through Care2? I'm not sure how it would work but I really like your comment. I think it would help get certain messages across.

Tell everyone to stay at home, it's better for their health! Everything else has already been said and I second those opinions to Boycott the Games.

It is so nice of the government to do that for the athletes and other people concerned with the olympics. What will happen afterwards, everything will go back to 'normal', and the chinese will have to put up with the pollution again. Will three weeks be enough to clear the air?

China Sucks in every way.. & of course our President is gonna go along with the opening & not Boycott it.. why should?? he is as bad as they are.. he should FEEL right at home with the murderous people of China.. maybe he'll eat that rare Dog Soup.. hope it give him indigestion.. why do they care what it looks like we already know what its is.. they are cruel to all who live there.. there own & the animals.. wonder if they will ban all inhumane treatments while the games are there... maybe the dogs & such will ahve a reprive.. but I will Boycott China altogether... just wished everything wasn't made by China here in the Proud U.S.A... NEVER WILL BE CLEAN.. it has too much dirt...

It is time to totally rethink the Olympics. We perhaps should have permanent sites for the summer and winter Olympics respectively. They should be in countries who have demonstrated true Olympic spirit in regards to their peoples. Perhaps in Scandinavia. Or maybe the time has come for the Olympics to end. They have become too commercialized and promoting of nationalism. It is very sad that China is so antagonistic toward such a beautiful religion and people.

Donald

Maybe we could hold the summer olympics in Greece - after all those were Greek games - but could you imagine the big $$$$$ going on a rampage? Plus we (Greece) really lost money on the games. I think Atlanta and other games as well.

Sadly I believe that this is an impossible dream for now at least, till peoplere-think their MONEY IS THE TRUE MEANING of life thinking.

Aisling - China does not care for individual life - only in the great collective in the abstract sense. This is why they can be so cruel and uncaring. Funny is that they almost think about this of themselves! This is what we never will understand!

I'm still praying for the biggest boycott the world has ever seen.
If next to nobody shows up this will send a clear message.
