WASH DC--Nation's Capital Kitties Wait for You at WARL! "Unbreak My Heart, Say You Will Love Me Again..."

Feline condos are made of sandstone Corian with beech accents. Each space has a separate toilet area. The carpet climbing structures are shaped like bonsai trees. A giant waterfall on one wall has terraced ledges, where cats perch and lap oxygenated water

Thanks to two heroes, Dave and Sophia, who do so much. BTW, the SPCA in San Francisco is no-kill and has beautiful cat homes. Used to volunteer there......

Oh my God Dave and Sophia, when I look at these pretty faces....I feel so bad, but you are there, you guys are God, angels, warriors....words are not enough to thank you both.
I wish I could do more to help, I don't even live in the States, all I can do is to donate and spread the word, this really depresses me. IN Germany the shelters are officially all no-kill shelters, so it is illegal to put them to sleep in the shelter( it still happens though..), why will America not follow this.., it's high time for a good change. The shelter of the city where I used to live until last year is one of the best ones in Germany.
Sophia, I will make a donation as soon as possible, I just have made too many donations lately.., animals suffer worldwide, and too many of them, so sad.
Sammantha, I heard SanFrancisco is no-kill city, so there should be no kill shelters, and also the world's most friendly city for the animals !! Thanks for helping the voiceless.

Noted, and Kudos to the people especially in DC. I hope this story gives the world a nicer view of the majority of people in Wash. Dc are decent caring folk and not pianted with the same paint that prevades the Gov.

Thank you for bringing the WARL to our attention. FYI, they have dogs, also. How wonderful to learn that such a excellent shelter exists. I also found many great links to other rescue resources.
Sophia, I know how you feel. The most we can do sometimes is just spread the word on the animals so many selfless rescuers are trying to save. But we all need to do something ... no matter how small. Everything makes a difference.

Yes, isn't it an astonishing organization? I might have thought of replacing the kitties' wire cage fronts with plexiglass, or blocking the dogs' views of one another with opaque panels. But an interior drinking waterfall with access ledgesfor the cats? Streams of fresh water cascading down the skylights to soothe the dogs? There was Stephen Hawking-caliber genius behind those astonishing innovations. When I attended the open house, we walked out on a catwalk looking down upon the dogs' quarters. What is more, the SHARE program forms relationships with open-admission ("kill") shelters and animal control oficers all up and down the East Cosat, to arrange for material assistance, and shipping animals from less fortunate jurisdictions to Washington for rehabilitation and adoption. (See SHARE program at http://tinyurl.com/2avt6w.)

What a beautiful, shining example! May the rest of the world wake up, take notice and do more of the same!

All of my pets are adopted and we have always taken in seniors when possible. It is too bad that so many people are so very ill-equipped to care for animal companions. If they were more able or better educated about animal companions, then there would be less abandoned and abused animals around. As is, most shelters do every thing possible to care for these abandoned pets, but some are just too far gone to help. We need much stronger laws throughout the U.S. to punish animal abusers and better education and maybe licensing restrictions on both pet owners and definitely on pet breeders. Requiring pet sellers to do background checks on prospective owners might be something to think about.

Here in Montgomery County, Maryland, licenses are required not only for dogs, but cats as well. (See http://tinyurl.com/2pmmbs. However, animal control officers don't go around ticketing kitties. If they are investigating another violation, perhaps they would write a ticket for no cat license. My own Gabriel and Xena (http://seniorpetsprogram.org/sweethearts.html) both have ID microchips, and never go outside without a harness and leash.
