Takes a 100 to a 1000 years to decompose outside of places other than an industrial composting facility? That's about the same friggin' amount of time it would take for normal plastic to biodegrade. But, it does have a few pluses over the normal kind. One, it would likely not contain the toxins that can be released into water or whatever things a regular plastic container can hold if reused more than once or twice. And as least it would likely biodegrade completely. Plastic just turns into small, imperceptible chunks which stay in the oceans, lands, and get into our drinking water because of such.

Any product with the Biodegradable Products Institut symbol will bio-degrade in less than 300 days. Compostech corn resins (as we prefer they be called, instead of "plastic") meet and in most acses exceed these standards in a regular landfill. Other benefits include sustainability, renewability, etc.
These products will come under attack. Some people say that because polystyrene and plastic don't bio-degrade, they don't release any mathane into the atmosphere, therefore they are better for the climate. These type of reaching arguments will become more pervelant as plastics and styrenes are replaced. Please filter them carefully!

Everything we do has an impact - plant-based "plastics" are great for some purposes, but we should refrain from producing any kind of waste - so let's keep it simple and reusable, and only if not to be avoided use plastics, then better made from newly grown plants than from oil (which is plant-based but not renewable, many nasty chemicals added) - and look for a reliable label for organic production on those plant-plastics, to avoid GMOs, artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other things you probably don't want in your environment and your body, nor that of your childrens'.
