There is no safe level of radiation. Keep nuclear waste out of my home and workplace!
Petition Background

US Dept of Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, plans to dump 14,000 tons of radioactive scrap metal into the marketplace for use in the manufacturing of consumer products, such as zippers, belt buckles, eyeglass frames, jewelry, watches, silverware, toys, pet bowls and leashes. This action is being fast-tracked, with little regard for public comment. THE DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 11 - please SIGN

Sunday February 10, 2013, 1:28 pm
Thanks Anjelika. Signed. "There are currently 31,837 signatures" (New target 40,000 signatures) - Isn't it amazing that mankind is playing with enriched uranium but still has no idea how to get rid of the waste?

Between the foul air, water and soils, GMO's climate change and now this. It would be kinder to just kill us. Slow cancer for each of us, we just don't know when. Jae has a point, maybe it would be safer to wear nothing. THEY are just stupid, how does it help or aid any business to kill off the consumers?

I am not sure that I agree!

I had a friend "Phil" who has fathered 13 children with seven women and that was 18 years ago. I have no idea as to how many kids he has now. Perhaps a radioactive zipper wouldn't be such a bad idea for him!

Now I have tried to look up and find out more information about this proposed action and see what is really going on. What I found is a bunch of alarmist sites posting petitions after petitions with no information to back up their fear-mongering.

Yes... I know... the current scientific consensus is that there is NO safe level of radiation exposure has been quoted over and over and over.

If you are really that worried about radiation exposure then stop smoking. If you are that scared of radiation, sell your brick house. If you don't want to be exposed to radiation, get rid of your granite counters. If you think radiation is so bad, stop wearing your watch with the glow in the dark hands.

Do you have a cell phone? If you do then you're getting zapped every time you use it!

If you really want to reduce your exposure to radiation stop flying on commercial jets - because you really get zapped when flying. During a seven-hour flight from New York to London, travelers receive about the same dose of radiation as a chest X-ray; from New York to Tokyo, two chest X-rays. Conversely, short trips to more southerly destinations reduce exposure. During the hour-and-a-half flight from West Palm Beach, Fla., to Atlanta, passengers receive slightly more radiation than a dental bitewing.

The food you eat and the air you breath are sources of radiation exposure.

Do you use suntanning booths? That is a great source for UV-A and UV-B radiation!

@ ravenswatch thank you for your valuable input. However, I imagine that most of us here DO OBSERVE what you listed above and nothing of it would apply to us,- NOT TO ME at least, for sure.

Apart from this, we need to FORCE govt. to FIND FINAL SOLUTION for their radioactive wastes. Road & rail transports from A > B are NO solution, nor is THIS use of spreading it among population an acceptable one!

I don't make the mistake of thinking that people observe practices or actually do more than just talk. Both my wife and I have worked with thousands of people and know better. I have seen enough people injured and killed because they do not observe much of anything!

Very few people on Care2 have received any training or certification on protocols, handling or transportation of radioactive material. I have, as has my wife. I can assure you from personal experience that even trained people don't observe much of anything. They just give it lip service!

The situation becomes worse when dealing with the public who doesn't know much of anything about the subject. What makes the situation sad is that when the Government does try to do something about this very serious problem... we end up with an ignorant public, who doesn't know what they are talking about, screaming bloody murder about how the Governments solution is so dangerous.

Really? Force the Government to do something?

People need to remember the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository fiasco. The sad fact is that everybody says that something needs to be done... just don't do it in my state. Just don't do it in my backyard. Plus... whatever is done, it must be 1000% perfect. So with those conditions by an ignorant public, nothing is done. Nothing will ever be done. Nothing can be done!

In my second paragraph that was posted at 5:37 AM, I wrote:

"Now I have tried to look up and find out more information about this proposed action and see what is really going on. What I found is a bunch of alarmist sites posting petitions after petitions with no information to back up their fear-mongering."

Does anybody on this thread have access to the actual report? Does anybody have the actual numbers? Does anybody on this thread even know what is contaminated?

I think it is great that a petition was created and people are signing it. If that makes people feel warm and fuzzy then they should go for it. They need to follow their heart and do what they feel is right. It certainly doesn't hurt anything by signing the petition or supporting it. I won't sign it because of several reasons. One being is that no information or sources are being provided so that an informed decision can be made.

Again, what is it that they want to recycle?

For our Government to ship Military watches or Military compasses, it has to be labeled radioactive because of the material inside. A watch with a luminescent dial is not a big deal to me. A compass is not a threat to me!

The issue of finding a "Final Solution" was brought up. (Really Heavy Sigh!)

Based on my experience, knowledge, training and education... there is no final solution!

You can make all large caps if you want, but that doesn't change anything. There is no solution. Nothing can be done... that will make everybody happy. Less than 1,000 people on Care2 even understand the situation or even know what they are talking about when it comes to this issue!

Now for the two or three people following this thread who wish to start learning, I would suggest spending an hour or so watching a documentary called:

Into Eternity

This documentary is about Onkalo (Hiding Place) that was started some years ago and will not be finished until the 22nd century. If it is successful, it will last 100,000 years. Nothing man has made has lasted even 1/10 of that time.

Most people don't understand the issues or problems our species faces when it comes to energy.

Your country, Germany, has made great strides in solar and wind energy. What is not understood by people is that solar and wind come with their own problems of environmental damage and pollution!

The hidden pollution caused by solar panels

The Greens’ bizarre campaign against wind turbines

Here in the United States, the production of Solar Panels has resulted in tons of toxic pollution that is being shipped across our country and dumped in land-fields.

The environmental impact for the production of wind turbines is even worse and like the solar industry, the wind industry doesn't like talking about the true costs to our planet!

Germany will need 111,000 100-meter wind turbines to replace the nuclear power plants that it has decided to phase out. Even if we ignore the carbon dioxide created in building these turbines, this will have zero net savings in carbon dioxide emissions once they are in place. And of course, unlike the nuclear power plants, the turbines will produce no electricity when the wind is not blowing.

What people don't understand is that to produce 111.000 100-meter wind turbines will require huge open pit mines that will devastate the surrounding area and environment!

Again, thanks Raven! I, too will have to further look into these other issues. But we never expected to get our necessary energy from those alternatives alone, after all we still have the gas pipeline from Russia which has recently been extended for another good part into Germany and more is in the planning.
At least that one is no Keystone !(even if "XL" as well )
