Senator Leahy: We Demand A Public Release of Legal Memos on Drone Strikes - ACTION

Senator Leahy should pressure the DOJ to release these memos not only to the Judiciary Committee, but to us, the people. We deserve to know who is being killed in our name, and why.

I like the president, but if he's going to claim the right to kill me with a flying robot, don't I at least deserve to know why?

Last week, we did a segment on The Daily Show about President Obama’s refusal to release the classified memos justifying his use of killer drones. Now, I've always said that I'm a comedian, even after my role in Big Daddy. But this story got me thinking a little more seriously.

Then I got a call from my friend Medea Benjamin, cofounder of CODEPINK. She saw that my correspondent Aasif Mandvi had the memos and wanted us to release them. But ever since he read them, Aasif's been too scared to come out from under his desk. So Medea asked me to join her in demanding that Congress do something. Naturally, I said no. I'm a comedian, not an activist. But then she said I could have one of the giant vaginas she sometimes wears and I said “absolutely.” As a virile man, I'd do anything for a vagina.

So join me in calling on Patrick Leahy – the big, bald-headed Democrat who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee – to get his hands on those drone memos. If he does, he'll be doing a public service. And he can have my vagina.

Yours,

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show

I do know something about this subject and it will be up to the Care2 community to search for more information on their own.

I don't feel that the DOJ or the current Administration will be releasing much information on this program. This won't happen because of two main issues:

1. Unmanned Armed Drones is a violation of International laws.

2. The United States has stated that we at war and will use all means at our disposal.

Now the reader needs to keep in mind that my very short generic explanation is just that. It is a very short generic explanation - nothing more. It is a given that this is a very complex issue. But, if you think about it, this shows a conflict between a Nation at war and who is trying to protect itself and International Law.

During a war, the rules and laws will always lose!

I am not justifying these actions at all. I just see both side of the issue.

My country's Drone Strike Program is causing immense anger and hatred in Muslim country's. This anger and hatred will be passed on from generation to generation. If you have doubts, talk to Armenians about their feelings towards Turkey. History will repeat itself!

I can only speculate about my country's decision to use armed drones!

The United Nations is powerless in fighting State Sponsored Terrorism. Very few country's have the power or political will to do anything about this growing problem. People also forget that there are secret agreements with the governments where the strikes are occurring. This allows the Pakistan and Yemen governments to deny all knowledge and condemn the United States, which only fuels hatred towards my country.

The key part is the fact that this is in fact State Sponsored Terrorism. Where is the money coming from?

It is not all from drugs, extortion and kidnapping. It takes a lot of money to fight a war. The better organized terrorist organizations are getting funding from leaders who are hedging their bets. This happens in politics all the time. If a company like a candidate, that candidate gets a large donation. The same company will give a much smaller donation to the candidate they don't like - you hedge your bets!

My feelings is that this is a war that will never end and it will contribute to the downfall of my country!

Unfortunately, every word Ravens writes is true! But that still does not justify people of the world to idly sit by and watch this happening forever and a day! If we give up fighting and demanding for change we would demonstrate indifference which would lead to even worse criminal actions by those who feel entitled to.
We have to try everything, even by such means as this particular "Pink Vagina petition" .

Angelika,

You are 100% correct. Under no circumstance would I suggest that people give up. People should never sit idly by and watch this going on.

As you know, I try to find answer. I try to find solutions. All too often, people point out problems and they never offer solutions. People in management or positions of power really hate it when that is done. I love when people come to me with problems and possible solutions. They don't have to be good or perfect solutions and I might not go with them. But is shows me that I am dealing with an exceptional person. It shows me that I am dealing with a person with leadership potential.

With the Drone Strike Program going on and with the fact that it has escalated to targeting US Citizens. One of the options that I see is going to the White House website and creating a petition requesting more information. Our President made the promise that if this is done, that once a certain level was reached, he would respond with an answer.

Next, I would suggest that every American Citizen on this thread contact the Senator directly through email, calls and letters. I would also suggest that people from other countries do the same thing. But please follow one suggestion, say what you want to say in less than 500 words, be very polite and to the point. It is very important that your letter have the following qualities:

[Insert Date]

Your Name
Address
City, S.C. Zip Code

The Honorable [Insert Senator’s Name]
Address
City, State, zipcode (It can be found on the Senators website

Dear Senator [Insert Last Name]:

My name is [Insert Your Name] and I reside at [Insert Your Address] in [Insert Your City], South Carolina. I am in the fourth grade at [Insert Your School].

I am writing you to ask that you help make the United States Drone Program more public and open for your constituents, citizens of your country and for the world!

Given the surge in anti-American sentiment overseas due to civilian casualties resulting from drone strikes, we have reason to believe that the targeted killing program only poses a greater threat to our national security.

I appreciate your help and ask that you please send me a response letting me know if you would be willing to help our country become better and reflect the values of our founding fathers.

Thank you for your time and considering my request.

Sincerely,

[Insert Your Name]

I think that the Pink Petition is a good idea and I would encourage people to sign it. But I do know how the system works. I have relatives who are in politics and are elected officials. They told me that 99% of Internet petitions are ignored.

So with this in mind, I am offering so solutions to a major problem.

I hope this helps and I thank you for the green star. I also thank you for being a friend. We will not always agree with issues - but you have demonstrated over and over that we can talk and debate without fear!

Angelika,

Some people don't know how to do what I just explained above. In most cases, they have never written to a Senator. In a lot of cases, they just don't have time. Here is a link to how it can be done electronically.

Senator Patrick Leahy

This is all that you need to say. You can write your own words if you want, please keep it simple. Our leaders are not that bright and big words confuse them. They also tend to fall asleep reading long letters.

Dear Senator Leahy:

As a concerned citizen of this world, I am writing to ask that you help make the United States Drone Program more public and open for your constituents, citizens of your country and for the world!

Given the surge in anti-American sentiment overseas due to civilian casualties resulting from drone strikes, I have reason to believe that the targeted killing program only poses a greater threat to the nations national security. I also feel that this will put other country's at risk!

Please help by releasing more information about this program and educate us as to why it is justified. If this cannot be justified, please help end this program!

I appreciate your help and ask that you please send me a response letting me know if you would be willing to help the United States become better and reflect the values of its founding fathers.

Thank you for your time and considering my request.

Geez ,Raven, -do we have a bunch of illiterates or idiots here on C2 ?? I am not a US citizen as most or all of you know, but I definitely know that every Senator and congressperson has their OWN WEBSITE where there is usually an option to submit a comment, email them or contact in any way! I would have bet that every US citizen knows this.

Angelica,

Here is the web address for the White House Petition:

Please copy it and pass it along.

Here is the hyperlink so that Care2 members can just click on it and sign.

As a concerned citizens of this world, we respectfully request that United States Drone Program more public!

This is the short URL that can be posted on Twitter: http://wh.gov/wm87

Please help spread the word!

It took me two try's, my first had too many typos because of my headache. (Plus I just can't write!)

I have done what I can and need other peoples help to get this petition on Care2. I also need help spreading the word about it. If you really want something done, this is my suggestions!

People don't find solutions... they just find problems. We all know that it is easy to find problems... anybody can do that!

Thank you again for being a friend.

Again, I could use some Care2 help by getting this posted. I am just not up to it now!

Actually Angelika, most Americans know very little about our Government and world. The majority of us cannot speak or write basic English. We our not bilingual and speaking three or more languages is out of the question. Most of us can not find other countries on the map and really don't care. When traveling to other countries, we wear white tennis shoes and are rude to other people because we think our country is the richest and most powerful in the world.

I am not joking.

Very few of us have left our state in which we were born. We are not familiar with other cultures and are extremely intolerant of beliefs, customs and religions that we don't understand. We think that we can do know wrong. We believe that we have saved the world not once, not twice, not even three times... we have saved the worlds so many times that we should be respected and loved by everyone.

I am not joking.

We believe we can do know wrong. We believe that we are not arrogant. We believe that we have the absolute best system in the entire history of mankind.

If you don't believe me... just look at what we are doing!

I could go on but you get the point.

Now, there are a few of us who have traveled and lived in other countries. We were taught to question, to do research, to keep an open mind, to have respect for others, to listen, to have adult conversations, to be understanding and forgiving.

A few of us actually know that Tylenol isn't rat poison (Shhh.. that's a national secret and I could go to prison!)

OK, this will be the last post on this thread from me, (and everybody says, "Thank God!")

The White House really makes it tough on people. This is the email that was sent to my Raven account:

Thank you for creating a petition on We the People!

You now have 30 days to get 100,000 signatures in order for your petition to be reviewed by the White House. Until your petition has 150 signatures, it will only be available from the following URL and will not be publicly viewable on the Open Petitions section of We the People:

http://wh.gov/wm87

Thirty days for 100,000 signatures that would actually have Obama address the issue. It won't even be noticed until 150 people sign it!

I don't feel that we have enough active Care2 members who would sign this. Notice, the petition isn't written in a way that demands anything. It is respectful and to the point. But it will cause some problems for the current administration:

The Obama administration promises to address any petition that meets the goal of 100,000 signatures. The Obama administration refuses to acknowledge the drone program. Imagine the jam they would be in if that small petition had 10,000,000 signatures!

Thirty days for one-million signatures. Can it be done?

Dear Jaime- Care2 is a wonderful forum to break down these barriers. I have learnt so much more about the American people since being a member. Like most countries in the world, the average person has very little say about what our Political leaders do in our name - and Australia is the same. It gives me hope when I hear similar sentiments being expressed by others.

Very glad to sign both petitions. Count at White House petition is now 23. Thanks so much for posting, Angelika and Ravens. I was so happy to see Jon Stewart do this. CODEPINK doesn't get much mainstream press. I agree the drones are just making more people in more countries angry at the U.S. which just creates unending war.
As I understand it, we are still living under The Bush Doctrine, which was a horrible thing that Obama should've eliminated and created his own "Obama Doctrine of Peace," which would've been the antithesis.
Through the White House website, I posted a letter asking him to do just that awhile back. Maybe someone could create another petition directing him to eliminate the Bush Doctrine and create his own.

Thank you so much for sending this email to Senator Leahy.

The ignorance in this Country can be linked to a media that has been asleep at the wheel since VietNam ended to the educational system being inflitrated by the likes of the Koch Brothers that places strings on their donations of what is to be taught and by whom. Also, Dominent Culture has always felt the need to "spin" history to suit those in power, just ask any American Indian, they'll tell you all about it. One can't learn from history if the historical facts are not presented or twisted.

David Rockefeller (1991): “We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected THEIR PROMISE OF DISCRETION for almost forty years… It would have been impossible for us to develop OUR PLAN FOR THE WORLD….”

However, sleeping giants do wake up after awhile, it's only a matter of time, just hope it walks in the correct way.
