Snowden is speaking about his revelation, industrial espionage and death threats he has received.
NDR (Northern Germany Broadcast) journalist and author has after 6 months of preparations, succeeded in getting this world's first live interview with Snowden.

hm, I actually did have some fear /idea that it may not be displayed overseas, could also have to do with possibly a different format for videos used here, not sure. In any case a real pity and a shame as well if this isn't made available via YOUR media!

such a blessing that there are always some smart folks uploading it to Youtube (not sure though if that was completely legal, read some eloquent info on the website of "Das Erste" (about what your PBS would be) about all their contract and legal terms as to selling and marketing of productions, also contractors involved etc)

I can assure you that the folks at SIEMENS will NOT be pleased at all with this! News here from our parliament already suggest a delay in talks about that TP trade deal...

Thanks for providing the transcript, Angie.

There were some wonderful quotes made by Snowden. I found this part of the discussion to be quite enlightening:

Hubert Seipel (Interviewing Journalist):
"President Obama obviously is in the very moment not quite convinced of that because he said to you are charged with three felonies and I quote: "If you Edward Snowden believe in what you did you should go back to America appear before the court with a lawyer and make your case." Is this the solution?"

Edward Snowden:
"Itís interesting because he mentions three felonies. What he doesnít say is that the crimes that he has charged me with are crimes that donít allow me to make my case. They donít allow me to defend myself in an open court to the public and convince a jury that what I did was to their benefit. The espionage act was never intended, itís from 1918, it was never intended to prosecute journalistic sources, people who are informing the newspapers about information thatís of public interest. It was intended for people who are selling documents in secret to foreign governments who are bombing bridges who are sabotaging communications not people who are serving the public good. So itís I would say illustrative that the president would choose to say someone should face the music when he knows the music is a show trial."

EXCELLENT!

Must watch it again.... LOVE HIM!

Angelika R (143)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 12:53 pm
First time ever he was brought to us all as the human, quite modest and very intelligent individual he is, not as the disputed "wanted" for prosecution, and worse. All the "mystery" surrounding him, mostly created by media, was taken out with this; that was very enjoyable to me. If you can, also watch that preparation video before the interview, if it is playing at your location.

I thought he was very intelligent, articulate and personable!

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 1:06 pm

True.

In fact, I wrote to one of my friends that he is "impressingly articulate."

Angelika R (143)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 2:02 pm
"It was intended for people who are selling documents in secret to foreign governments"-well, Carole, I am sure it did not escape you that this is precisely what certain people in congress are alledging him of having done-and trying their hardest to get that spin around in public.(how about a probe into NSA staff for that, in fact of govt. FVEY sharing or selling-where's the difference) )

Deb E (63)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 2:16 pm
He's guilty of one thing. Trying to show people what our government is capable of.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 2:20 pm

Snowden addressed these charges of being a traitor as follows:

"If I am a traitor who did I betray? I gave all of my information to the American public, to American journalists who are reporting on American issues. If they see that as treason I think people really need to consider who do they think theyíre working for. The public is supposed to be their boss not their enemy."

Very scary, I'm surprised this hasn't been taken down yet. Thank you Angelika and thank you Carole for the forward and the link

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 2:57 pm

It's as imperative that Snowden be allowed to live where he can have some semblance of safety as it is for him not to be silenced.

We should have the right to hear what he has to say so that we can measure for ourselves both what we read in the media and government versus his reasoning -- and then decide for ourselves what is right.

The very fact that so many of us were uncertain whether the video would be removed is proof that we are becoming accustomed to censorship.

Excellent. I watched the video, and will review the transcript later on, but what an interview.! He deserves to come home, and NOT be labeled a traitor. He is very articulate in this discussion. Thank you, Angelika for posting, and Carole for your FW. I'm definitely bookmarking, and passing this on to others.!!

I think it is also worth pointing out that he said he HAS NO MORE INFORMATION ON HIM, GAVE IT ALL to the selected journalists. THAT has been another sticking point of those wanting to prosecute him.

I had already watched this from the link you left on a thread; good to see you added this onto the C2 News. It only once more highlights that there was no malice in his intentions but to alert the public what is truly going on. I think we have all known that Big Brother has been watching over our shoulders, but to the depth it has deepened we are getting a clearer picture. That when a private contractor, and an Agency with little oversight, can access the Heads of all States on down, private conversations and business dealings that have nothing to do with security but may have everything to do with privacy or edging out competition then there is a problem. We are fortunate that he exposed to the world what he did this way, wonder if someone else sat in his seat, had chosen to use the information in some other "dark" way.......no one is safe, from the high school student using their cell phone to the Head of any Country.

"I think it tells a story and thatís no matter how deeply an individual is embedded in the government, no matter how faithful to the government they are, no matter how strongly they believe in the causes of their government as I did during the Iraq war, people can learn, people can discover the line between appropriate government behaviour and actual wrongdoing and I think it became clear to me that that line had been crossed."

You did, can't remember which story you left it under. It was direct link to the interview, not to your news link. If I stumble across the thread again, I'll point it out to you. Don't worry, I do things and move along that I don't always recall either. We get busy.

The link you left it on was the news Sam placed on Why Snowden Can't Be Blamed. It is a great interview with Susan Lindauer of whom the American people should know also her contribution.

hmm, now this REALLY got me wondering if I've already developped the "care2heimer"-must be.. :-// But cannot rule out that I did, either as often I WANT to submit a breaking story immediately to C2NN but, am just too tired at the time and push it off, often to change my mind again right after and proceed with submitting nevertheless.

Yes I did put the link to this interview on Sam's post (which I had previously hinted him ) so wanted him to see it first, possibly for testing if the video would open and play for US at all. Then a bit later made my own submission here. Correct, Sheryl.:)

A message on the German film posted here said that it could only be shown/seen in Germany. Thank you, Carole, for hunting down the YouTube version. And thanks, of course, to Angelika for getting this to us. It's very interesting to finally get a chance to hear what this "whistle blower" sounds like. He does appear to be quite thoughtful and intelligent, not some fly-by-night weirdo, as some would like to make him out to be. I still have never heard Cpl. Manning interviewed... you know, the military person who has been jailed (and abused, IMO) for years now in America, the home of the free and the brave! I'm an American but I'm getting mighty angry with America's superciliousness. Who is spying on the spiers???? Men like Snowden at least have the guts to put it out in the open so that we can decide whether we want to support such actions as this government is taking. Whether we can affect the outcome of this knowledge is another matter. Thanks again, Angelika, for posting this.

Out of curiosity, I just checked to see if the interview video was still there.

Not surprisingly, the one on YouTube was removed (with a message that it was removed due to a copyright claim), but the Vimeo and Live Leak videos are still accessible.

Thanks for the update Carole. YouTube seems to have a lot of videos that disappear rather quickly as of late.

Yes, that's true, Sheryl (and it's why, whenever I happen upon a highly controversial video there, I download it for my own future reference).
