The Arizona state legislature just passed a horrific "religious freedom" bill that would allow businesses to discriminate against whoever they wish, so long as they claim a religious motivation.

Signed the first in email this AM, the second just now, and going to jim's after this. Thanks to you both.

Comment made on #1 went something like - wonder if all the businesses putting up anti-gay signs realize just how much the LGBT community impact their businesses. They're going to find out very soon after showing their bigotry. Wouldn't be surprised if some will even lose business to the point of closing.

Hopefully, these places will continues to lose business even if/when they take down those horrid signs...

Why do people even care? It's just such a non issue that my wondering comes in to play less about what they're doing but more about why they even care in the first place.

Brewer will veto it ONLY because of the lost revenue that will come. You can bet your ass, she really wants to sign it. She's a crazy racist hater, after all.

Noted. Both petitions gladly signed (probably 2ce). Many thanks for posting, Angelika.

I've been signing petitions and sending letters sent to me by many groups the past couple days. Since I live in AZ, I've gotten a massive amount of them. Know that there are protests on the ground here in Tucson as well as Phoenix. Every day. And, the local news reporting has been good, too. One of the original sponsors of the bill has asked the Gov. not to sign it into law, and a couple other GOP legislators have spoken out against it....mostly from a business standpoint...that it will severely hurt the state's economy. The Chamber of Commerce has also asked the Gov. not to sign it. There are a few Tea Party rightwing radicals in the legislature who are still defending it, as well as a tiny minority of citizens commenting online in their usual hate-filled way. With all the pressure, I can't possibly see how Brewer can sign it. But, the protests, phone calls, emails will continue until she either vetoes it, or it "expires." If she doesn't sign it by Fri (or Sat?), it's considered as dead.

For those interested, CREDO also has a petition going. Terrible that a minority few people can cause so much havoc. AZ is just as diverse as any other state in America, these right wing politicians do not reflect the majority view. I hope Brewer does the right thing.

When are we going to have some real freedom from religion in this country? What a bunch of hypocrites. If she does veto it, it’ll be because of the heavy pressure of economic and political; considerations and not because of any Judeo-Christian ethical values or teachings. If that were the case she would have veto’d it immediately.

Gov. Brewer is going to do the right thing, but only because, as some have posted here, she's getting some serious pressure by some Republicans, and major corporations to veto SB1062. Vetoing this bill will have nothing to do with decency, respect and progressive ideals that honor the American Constitution. It will have everything to do with economic survival and, quite possibly, to prevent Arizona as being viewed as the most discriminatory state in the union.
As Phil P. stated, if Gov. Brewer really believed in doing the "right thing", she would had vetoed this disgusting, and unconstitutional,anti-gay bill as soon as it landed on her desk.

Noted and signed all petitions. Thanks, Angelika.

Lynn -if they COULD, they WOULD, and probably saying "no blacks, no gays allowed".
I guess the right wing business witch will realize it would hurt business more than promote it and will likely veto, that has been made pretty clear to her. Yes, most of the well know progressive groups have their own petition out for this, they'll probably pool them for delivery, but that may not even be necessary as there are suggestions she may already proceed today or on Thursday, likely to veto the bill.- we're watching..

Re Esther: "...to prevent Arizona as being viewed as the most discriminatory state in the union. "

well, Everyone who watched the interview AC had out on AC 350(CNN) will now KNOW that in fact AZ IS ALREADY the most discriminatory state! With its 3000 lawsuits over discrimination in the past year alone it exceeds even NY by a huge margin, compared to citizens number.

This whole thing has been mind boggling. A friend has a joke about what is the point of being stupid if you can't open your mouth and show it.
From the earth being 6,000 years old to being able to "catch" gayness..... sometimes I wonder what planet I am on. I'm purple from pinching myself in a futile attempt to wake up from this dream of "this is real!"
Something definately in the water. I just hope stupidness isn't catching. Neanderthal genes seem to be dominant. As a species- we are doomed.
