In countries across Asia, thousands of bears live a life of torture on bear farms, so that their bile can be extracted and used in traditional medicine to cure ailments ranging from headaches to haemorrhoids. Bears are confined in cages which vary from agonisingly tiny "crush" cages to larger pens, all of which cause terrible physical and mental suffering.

This is such a sad story...and seems to be definite proof that the mother bear was sentient..could no longer bear the suffering and committed murder suicide. No one will ever convince me that animals don't have feelings...and compassion---qualities lacking in many homo sapiens.

I read this story a few months ago, I save it not because is beautiful, but because it is a reminder of the loyalty, the unconditional love of a mother bear, and the willing to prove her love on the most painful and ultimate of circumstance, it brought me down on my knees drowning in my own tears because that is how horrible this is. I found it hart to believe, how in the name of God can some so call themselves humans do such a horrible thing to one magnificent creature, who dared to prove her love in a way that most humans can NOT comprehend. This was for me the very first time I came to learn about bile farms. Yes, I hope for karma to cash in for these bastards where in hurt them the most, anyone who can hurt an innocent this way don't deserve any consideration neither the right to life. Animals have the same ability as men to sorrow, love and despair, and have enough intelligence to execute their own death under the influence of pain or illness. Anger, frustration and utter sadness are the emotions triggered within me, always the same, no matter how many times you get exposed to it. Desensitisation doesn't seem to apply in regard to animal cruelty, completely different to how my attitude to fellow human beings has changed over a lifetime, trust has seriously diminished.
That's why I value the care2 community so much, it restores the lost trust somewhat and functions as an incentive to not give up. Hey, now I know there are many more nutcases like me out there... more than I ever could have imagined.
We will keep on pressuring this issue, until it is STOPPED!

Read this a while ago and signed the petition. The reasons this cruelty is still going on are humans' greed and stupidity. China has to start doing something to stop all of their evil "traditional" practices. I don't think they can change their people right away but they can make a good law with strict punishment to prevent these types of cruelty for the start.

I've been involved with this for some time and made contributions, written letters signed petitions - but as long as it is allowed for so called cultural and medicinal purposes it will continue.

More than 12,000 bears are suffering cruel conditions in Asia’s bear farms

They are confined so bile can be extracted from their gall bladders and sold for use in some Traditional Asian Medicine, according to World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)
The methods used to extract bile causes severe pain and trauma to the bears, who occupy tiny cages.

Bear farmers sometimes argue that by supplying the demand for bear bile their industry protects wild bears

I saw your comment and had to respond. The truth is - it's got absolutely nought to do with TCM as the practitioners all KNOW fully well the herbal alternatives (which is more efficient than the actual bear bile and a whole lot cheaper)....but... Bear bile like the tiger parts and rhino horns bring HUGE profits!

Yes most of the TCM customers are very old school stuck-in-their-ways Chinese and are hard to educate - so the TCM practtioners exploit this ignorance further by pushing "Bullshit" remedies to enhace their profit margins!

GREED! GREED! GREED!

But please don't despair Pam, for if you understand and can try and acknowledge as to how karma & reincarnation works... make no mistake that these barbaric bear farmers will HAVE to endure the same horror as they inflict on these bears in future reincarnated lives. Remember the old adage - "What goes around, comes around"

I did learn of this months ago. Human beings who participate in cruelty and sadism for money or for any insane reason are driving all life down. We must boycott all Chinese products for this and many other reasons. We must write letters and sign petitions against Chinese practices that harm life...get out of Tibet, Africa, and the lives of animals, China! In the meantime, each one of us can make the simple decision to eat only organic, non GMO veg'n foods, and much less, to do our part to balance out the destruction of this planet and Nature, to restore sanity and respect for life, to return to a balance of karma and life.

This is heart-crushing and needs to be shared & shared some more. A mother will always protect it's young, this is testament, to the bond shared between a mother and her young. Noted!

Sadly noted with tears in my eyes for these long suffering bears.HEARTBREAKING to think of them with no comfort or kindness shown to them,unbearable pain,terror and suffering for years in tiny cages,i think about these beautiful bears each night and cannot sleep,my heart bleeds for them,how cruel and barbaric this practice is!!!!!!!!! Such horror at the hands of EVIL HUMANS! Rest In Peace mummy and baby bear,together forever with no more suffering.I have signed many petitons and commented and will carry on doing so,i pray this brutal horror will end in my lifetime.Will now send a donation to Animal Asia.Thank you to all for your caring hearts,together we can make a difference.Thank you Henriette for the fwd.Liz Xx

Thank you Dee, I did read about this awhile ago, and it haunted me then and I have thought about it off and on for all the time...the Mother's Love for her Cub,, her suffering for Mankind's usless Greed. Horrific, Obscene and #!#!! Had me sobbing before and tears falling now that this goes on. Going to sign off eyes to wet to type. Noted with extreme sorrow!
