Coral Castle was built in the early 20th century by an eccentric Latvian recluse named Edward Leedskalnin who allegedly left Latvia when he was rejected by his 16 year old fiance. He would never marry and would spend 30 years of his life building a

Rafael,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece about Coral Castle. I have been there - many years ago. When you walk into the front office at Coral Castle, you see a letter from the Army Corps of Engineers, who have examined Coral Castle at length. The letter states that they cant figure out how Mr. L. built any of it.
When I was there, the rod in the large swinging gate had been broken. No one at that time could fix it - no one knew how.
Behind Coral Castle, you see a rectangular pit with very straight lines where Mr. L. cut out the gate - all in one piece.
This place is one of the world's great mysteries.

What's also interesting is that his fiance ran away. She never would speak to him again. She always declined to be interviewed about him by anyone. She didn't want to speak about him at all. You have to wonder what spooked her.

I thought you'd find this interesting Patrice and everyone-

From Wikipedia ---Edward spent over 28 years building the Coral Castle, refusing to allow anyone to view him while he worked. A few teenagers claimed to have witnessed his work, reported that he had caused the blocks of coral to move like hydrogen balloons. The only tool that Leedskalnin spoke of using was a "perpetual motion holder."

Leedskalnin originally built the castle, which he named Rock Gate Park, in Florida City, FL around 1923. He purchased the land from Ruben Moser whose wife helped assist him when he had a very bad bout with tuberculosis.[2] Florida City, which borders the Florida Everglades, is the southernmost city in the United States that is not on an island. It was an extremely remote location with very little development at the time. The castle remained in Florida City until about 1936 when Leedskalnin decided to move and take the castle with him. The Coral Castle website states that he chose to move in order to protect his privacy when discussion about developing land in the area of the castle started.[3] The second commonly held notion was that he wanted to relocate to a more populous locale after being badly beaten one night by hooligans looking to rob him.[4] He spent three years moving the Coral Castle structures 10 miles (16 km) north from Florida City to its current location in Homestead, FL.

This world is full of mystery and this certainly is one of them. I have seen this on TV and, like many, are truely amazed. Thank you Patrice for sharing your personal knowledge about this place for I did not know about the fiance part. Yes, does sound that she was too afraid to say anything to anyone. Well they both took to their grave whatever knowledge they had.

I remember something else I read in that letter from the Army Corps of Engineers. The swinging gate is something they could not figure out. When it worked, a very small child could swing it all the way around with one push of the finger. If the rock were solid, it would not be that difficult to balance. But coral rock is extremely porous. Some pores are large, some are small. Just because you insert the rod into the exact center of the rock won't necessarily be the balance point in porous rock. The Army Corps of Engineers said that the gate was basically an impossibility. Mr. L. had determined where to insert the rod to have it perfectly balanced on both sides in order for it to swing around so easily - something, according to the ACOE, that can't be done with coral rock!.
