NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old New York girl was sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile facility for putting a kitten in an oven and leaving it to roast alive, officials said.

The New York Law Department said Whitney B. pleaded guilty to burglary and animal cruelty, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. Her full name was not revealed because she is being treated as a juvenile.

Whitney and a friend, Cheyenne Cherry, 17, admitted breaking into another young woman's apartment in The Bronx. They were angry at Valerie Hernandez, a former friend. The pair trashed the apartment and killed the kitten, named Tiger Lily.

Investigators said Whitney was the one who actually carried out the killing, turning the oven up to 500 degrees after shutting Tiger Lily inside.

Cherry, who pleaded guilty last month, is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 2. She faces a year in jail.

When she appeared in court in July, she exchanged insults with animal rights activists.

I wonder if they were worried about her age-14

-I am waiting to see what happens to the other horror Cheyenne Cherry. This IS THE ONE who actually killed Tiger Lily the investigators said.

Cheyenne Cherry just gobbled up the press. WE never heard much about this one. I hope this "kid" has the stay of her life. In a juvenile facility it can get pretty rough. I hope there is an animal lover in there who wants payback for Tiger Lily.

Cherry, who pleaded guilty last month, is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 2. She faces a year in jail.

I agree, this is just a slap on the wrist. That #### is a worse than any monster for watching it happen and the one who did it, well, there aren't enough harsh and vile words to describe her.

As un Christian as it might sound, I hope that the "what goes around comes around" holds true here. These two deserve whatever they get when incarcerated, although I doubt even a stay in jail or detention will ever make these creatures feel what they did was wrong.

Where do people, even kids, come up with this vile stuff? No, 18 months is not long enough for torture of a helpless animal. I'm so glad laws are changing to protect our animals.

18 months only? If someone commits such a bad crime as killing anyone, wether its a human being or an animal, age of the guilty one should not matter, and they should recieve full punishment for their crime. At least this girl also should have her mentality checked. Cause healthy people do not do this kind of things, no matter age. This teenager is for crying out 14 years old. She is very well old enough to take responsibilities, and thus also face the consequences of her choices, and not being pat on the head and being told ''there there...''

I'm all for roast 14 year old myself. Basted in a nice sauce and fed to all those who are crazy enough to do this kind of thing. 18 months doesn't cut it - a lobotomy might.

People please, this is a 14 year old girl who was probably just following the 17 year old girl as a figure to look up to there being no-one else. Bear in mind it is probable that these girls do not come from a loving caring backgound and may even have been abused.

What these girls did was terrible beyond belief and I am so sorry for a little life that died too early and in such a manner. However, remember we need to stop them doing something like this again and that means understanding and dealing with it, not just locking them up. Remember, animal abuse is linked to child abuse and those that go on to do it have often been abused themselves in other works there is a vicious cycle that needs to be broken.

Gillian you may be right, but, for the protection of others people like this can't get away with no punishment. Yes, she needs counseling, but also, she needs to know that hurting the helpless is a BIG NO NO. I agree, there should be massive counseling in our prison and jails, counseling that proves you KNOW the answer to the right thing. We can't MAKE anyone any where do the right thing. What we can do is educate and hope they want to do the right thing. We can lead a horse to water but we can't make him drink, BUT, we sure as hell can make him thirsty! I'm all for help for this child, and for the 17 year old. BUT, that help INCLUDES punishment.

No, I don't think so, not in this case. Whitney came to court and insulted those that protested her actions. That evil incarnate knew what she did, and had no remorse. Eighteen months is not long enough, she should have received years. With counceling and the strictest rules possible under law. I doubt it will make a dent in this child. Karma will get this girl if she doesn't change her ways.

18 months is not enough. Whitney B obviously has some psycological issues and needs serious treatment. Otherwise, her 18 months in jail will only be a training ground for more horrendous crimes when she is released.

i agree ! break the cycle.and in this case about 50 years should help.she knew what she was ding, and for that as far as i'm concerned it excludes any sympathy that anyone should feel for it ! cause she has now become an it to me !something of no consquence.she knew and she liked doing it!it was a vengeful get back at someone thing.so she derserves nothing but contempt, and a lot of time with some of the sweet ladies whohave been in there for a long time! thanks Rafael!

This girl Whitney, and her friend, deserve, much worse than they received from the Court...From what I've read, they've both been in trouble before, and Whitney, thinks living the Thug Life is the way to go, so treat her like the wanna be thug she want's to be, and put her ass in a real jail...Juvenile Detention, is a vacation for people like her...What she did shows she has no feeelings for any living ctreature...How long before this girl will wind up killing a human being? It's only a matter of time...As a Christian, I always hope and pray for redemption, but this girl is only 14, and has been in trouble before and now look what she's done...I cannot pray for her, in fact, my only pray, would be for her to suffer, they way that poor innocent kitten suffered...I hope when she meets her maker, he send her to burn in hell, which is where this Bitch deserves to spend eternity...

They should send her to Africa, to a cell in some hell-hole prison with no air conditioning or anything to cool her down. It's not enough to kill her (maybe) but just enough to roast her alive. FOR 40 YEARS!!!!

Poor, poor little baby kitten. I can't believe the senseless cruelty and injustice that has been allowed to take place here! No matter how many times I hear this story, the pain of that tiny kitten, Tiger Lilly, is too much to think about. OH GOD NO! The #### must pay....

Can't help but notice alot of people is commenting this, and to those few that thinks that she should have help and not be locked up... Did you hear about that employee from the Ohio Petland store, with the woman drowning those bunnies? She was an adult, and alot of people thought she was sickminded and should have strongest possible punishment. This is just the same thing, exept it being a younger person. Its the same cruel act, and should have the same punishment.

18 months is not enough for that bitch but at least better this as nothing at all. If this had taken place here in Germany she just would have gotten a fine. A slap on the wrist. And that makes me so furious about the legislation here. Maybe the slut will get beaten to death while she,s in jail as justice for Tiger Lilly. Let,s hope and pray .

18 months is not long enough for murdering a helpless animal in such a vile, evil manner. I wonder what sentence Cheyenne Cherry who actually carried out the abuse and murder of Tiger Lily will receive. Much more than 18 months in juvy, I surely hope.
For each of these girls, what goes around, comes around and both are due a big bite of Karma to bite them on the ass!
No punishment can bring back Tiger Lily, but if harsh, no quarter sentences were handed out to more of these juvenile animal abusers, it would send a message to other potential abusers, to think, this will change my life and take away my freedom for a long time.

I agree with everyone that there shouldn't even be any time limit in prison for this satanic piece of scum! Not even exorcism would work here! However, thinking about the disgusting sex-offender that raped 2 small children, sister and brother, and just now will get out of jail after ONLY 1 YEAR of time ... this sentence isn't even that bad! We need to toughen up ALL sentencing guidelines and replace some of the liberal lenient judges! that dont give a damn as long as it doesn't effect them or their families.

Thanks everyone

-I do not know how the "investigators" arrived at Whitney as the primary criminal here but I am waiting to see the sentence handed down to Cherry-thanks for all your comments.

As someone who has suffered through having seen my own cats murdered in front of me by a brute (my ex-husband) I am very emotionally involved in this story. If she went into the apartment (Whitney) and put the oven on first this was premeditated murder. She KNEW she would kill this kitten. This was ruthless with malice aforethought.

I am a victim of severe childhood abuse (physical and mental) and I have never raised a hand to an animal and I never would. I do believe that abuse is passed on and there is a wheel that must stop turning to break the momentum of it but THIS girl (14 or 41) knew what she was doing-she had the oven on and she knew she would do this. She could have stopped and turned it off and never followed through.

Cheyenne Cherry (whatever part she played) is another one-arrogant and horrid and loved all the attention the press gave her. Karma takes no prisoners. It doesn't care how old you are or anything else-it just rights things. Somewhere along the line this one and the other one will pay for what they did and Tiger Lily will be there for it.

Whether 18 months or years-karma only needs that split second where the Universe blinks and it is over!

I was commenting on the 14 year old girl, Whitney, not Cherry. I have worked with abused people and am currently in the justice system. It is rare that anything is that black & white. In my opinion, Whitney was looking for approval from Cherry and 14 or 41, she needed that to help her self esteem. She probably has a terrible home life and needs someone to notice and approve of her.

What Cherry did (& she was the one who performed this terrible act) is indescribable but I have heard worse. I am not condoning the act, far from it. I was distressed for Tiger Lily, it was a terrible way to die.

Now, we do need to ensure that there is punishment so that these children (& that is what they are) understand that what they did was wrong. I am sure that Cherry did understand that her act was horrendous. However, just sending someone to prison without ensuring that they understand what they did was wrong and not dealing with the underlying problem, just means that they will leave prison and do it again, maybe to a child.

I am not a dogooder but someone who wants to stop as much evil in this world as possible. Just condemning someone and ignoring the problem is not going to stop it happening again. It may be that if we help these children that they may stop someone else doing it.

By the way, children are not usually born with a desire to kill but they learn for themselves that they can take their frustrations out on those weaker than themselves, it makes them feel good. You are right Blue, they need to be taught how NOT to take their frustrations out on those weaker than themselves which, is exactly what I have been saying.

At 14 she knew better, at 17 the other girl certainly did. That being said, I can't defend protection of all life by saying I wish they were condemned to death as some people here have.

The time is short, but minors always get less time. It is disgusting and she should have gotten more, but at least the laws are finally starting to change.

Kids are not born to kill, no... but they are born with a brain. She knows the difference in right and wrong at 14, no matter what her parents say/how they act. A bad upbringing is not a defense for murder, not of a human and not of an animal.

Being abused or not, as a child, does not mean you put a kitten in to a oven, and become abusive yourself, that girl had a big grin on her face as if she thought it was a big joke. She knew what she was doing.I know people that have worked in the justice system, and they would not approve of this girl's action! They know they have a job to do and that is what it all comes down to.All because certain one's decided to follow through with bad behaviour because they didn't have a good home life doesn't cut it period.

i fill this way about any aged person and people. If you are old enough to commit murder then you are old enough to be put to death. We the people should not pay for these murders to be in jail. They should be tried and when found guilty they should immediately be put to death. Our society is too soft on people that commit these acts. The life, epically, as defenseless as these are, is not coming back. Remember animals should be treated as respectful as humans are and with the same protection laws that humans have. Think about it, we are all animals of one or another species. Our society desires to make excuses for people that commit murder and then allow them to live out a sentence in Jail or Juvenal hall as we the people are supporting the lives of these sub-humans. This is just one reason why our society is as torn down as it is.
its not that there are not enough laws, its that they are not very enforced

Sincerely;

An-Drew Boger

What it comes down to is that somethings are just wrong and even 14 year olds know it!!!! Especially if they've been abused because they know it feels wrong. We all reach an age when we have a consceince and know right from wrong. There was no mention of mental instability so she did not get enough and neither will the other girl. People don't get enought time and that's why the crime continues. "I can do a couple years with my eyes closed" It doesn't matter to most people anymore. that's why we have to have sites like CARE 2.

If that were my kitten, I would NEVER stop doing everything I could to make the lives of the perpetrators miserable, even down to planning elaborate physical torture. I agree 18 months is not long enough. Whether or not they went to jail at all, they would be doing other, horrible things to other animals, perhaps people or even children. When I think of the sounds the kitten must have made in the oven, all I can think is that these 2 listened and still didn't show any mercy for the poor, innocent little baby kitty.

They should be in a facility till they're old and gray.

This is disgusting. How could teenagers become so cruel? What have their parents got to say about all this? Are they too preoccupied to devote time for their kids? Gilian M, doesn't your justice system provide for counselling while in prison? Or are your prisons just " universities for crime"? This is so in many countries. Let us try to change our systems and if possible, our present day predilection among juvenilles for crime.

This is outrageous - she should get 'hard labour' and not to live it up with free internet and the rest of the other amenities at the expense of us taxpayers. These kids are BAD SEEDS and should be punished to the max - to beat some sense in their wicked ways. There should be a law to punish their parents as well - that is where the problems started anyway ' -allow to do whatever, whenever and on whoever. To the parents, the rest of us think you are a bunch of poor excuses for parents and since we have to pay for rehab due to the your lack of parental care we should be able to determine that you as parents need to pay back society with some kind of community work.

How low can humans get!!! if one is angry to a person, then hate the person!!! Not the pet of that person! What in Pete's sake did the kitten do! Nothing! absolutely nothing! I'd like to exchange insults to that twit!

Thanks Rafael. When will humans ever change.

All of the excuses in the world about these "misunderstood" or "mistreated" "girls" will not bring back the innocent kitten. They are human garbage. Period. There are many kids who withstand brutal childhood abuse, even terrible traumas, yet instinctively know right from wrong and take the opposite direction from these subhumans. Rather than kill and destroy, they gently nurture and revere life, the very things they missed. My best high school friend was a fine example.

These killer creeps will likely only perpetuate their violent tendencies when they reproduce. They shouldn't be allowed in civilized society until they are too old to breed. Shame on them. The punishment did not fit the heinous nature of the crime.

I read this in an Austrian online newspaper yesterdaythat in Russia, a man was convicted to 17 months of HARD LABOR for killing his daughter's kitten. He had ripped it from her arms and thrown it against a wall. I guess they have stricter anti-cruelty laws!

Stories like this remind me of what a friend of mine went through. She lived in the hinterlands of South West Wisconsin in an intentional community called "Dreamtime". An unfortunate number of their neighbors were described to me as very inbred, hillbilly types. I can't confirm the charge of inbreeding, but what I DO know happened is that the locals, who would normally drown their unwanted animals, started dumping them at Dreamtime so they could "let the hippies take care of them". This friend of mine loved animals and took them all in, though she could not afford to feed them. I took 2 beautiful kittens off of her and gave them the best life I could. The rest (at least 10 cats, a black lab and a wolf) lived in difficult conditions with fleas, ear mites, intestinal parasites and other afflictions, as my friend could certainly not afford veterinary care for them.

Some neighbors whose house is within eye shot of my friend's old house kept their dogs, whom they used for hunting, tied to a stake in the front yard, and starved them so they would hunt more voraciously. My friend grew tired of hearing the poor dogs yelping with hunger, took mercy on them and fed them. The neighbors lacked the civility to speak to my friend and ask her not to do it again, and in retribution for the heinous crime of feeding their starving dogs, the neighbors slashed the tires of my friend's truck, kidnapped her beautiful black lab and beat the poor thing to within an inch of its life. The poor dog was never the same after this. I entreated her to go to the sheriff, she said she had talked with the sheriff and was told not to push it, as it may lead to a "range war", apparently a common occurrence among such trash lacking the common humanity to talk with those doing something they don't like. One of the frequent practices during such a "range war" is to pour used motor oil (very toxic and carcinogenic) all over the farm animals of one's foe, sheep or calves or such. I've never intrinsically had anything against rural folks, but when I heard this story and saw what was done to my friends lab, all I could think was that these scum bags didn't deserve to keep sucking oxygen, and that the world would be a better place if someone went into their home with a pump shotgun and cleaned house. When someone treats animals this way, one can usually only imagine how they treat people. I would assume that the wife and kids in that house got regular beatings, though I certainly don't know.

When I was a teenager, I had a hippiesque, love everybody, holistic view of the universe. As an adult, I now know that some people are nothing but trash.

when kids start out like she has, i don't have a lot of hope for them. this just screams something was terribly wrong in her upbringing as she was never taught to never harm animals or any innocent person. i honestly don't know what can be done for messed up youth like her. it's about a change of heart and this girl is going to need a serious transformation from within that prison just doesn't provide. prison has never reformed anyone, it just makes them more hardened or more schooled at the COC - college of crime. i think it's despicable what she did and i remember my first reaction which still holds to this day was that anyone who does such heinous acts on anyone, animal or person, should not live to see the light of day again. no appeals, no nothing. just executed. isn't it odd that we exterminate a dog for mauling someone, but we give a pass to people? we are all interconnected.

“THESE BIRDS AND ANIMALS AND FISH CANNOT SPEAK,
BUT THEY CAN SUFFER…

…AND OUR GOD WHO CREATED THEM
KNOWS THEIR SUFFERINGS,
AND WILL HOLD HIM WHO CAUSES THEM TO SUFFER UNNECESSARILY
TO ANSWER FOR IT.
IT IS A SIN AGAINST THEIR CREATOR.”

-George Q. Cannon

How can there be people in the world who would perpetrate such a monstrous act against such an innocent little creature? Nothing, no matter how awful that they would have been through in their own lives, should be allowed to explain away the horrendous nature of their crime. While there are people who try to say that these are still only children etc. there will never be justice for animals. How dare anyone say that cruelty or abuse in their lives, explains the torture they carry out on any innocent creature. They have brains in their heads, and they surely know right from wrong. If a dog bites, he is put down (Don't say put to sleep - say PUT DOWN) but if a human tortures an innocent creature he gets a slap on the wrist. I also don't believe they should have the priviledge of privacy just because they are juveniles. If a person can commit torture on another human or an animal, they should lose that right....... When I think of that poor little creature meaowing and crying in agony, and neither of those b.....s had the heart to open that door and save him - It makes me want to give up on human nature. They should be given 5 years of hard labour and then their minds wouldn't be so vacant and filled with evil thoughts.

Adding to my previous comment, I think that everything in this world has become too lenient. I work in a school as an assistant, and even the young kids of 8 shout abuse at teachers if they are told off. They refuse to take punishment and their parents back them up. It is hell on earth at times in school with so many brats in each class ruining it for all the other students who want to learn. There is no punishment to speak of, and so they become more brazen towards the staff each time they get away with it. This leniency is invading every part of society and shows up in the judicial and educational systems.... It is showing up particularly when it comes to cruelty to animals. If these monsters who abuse animals (or child or aged person etc) were to be given punishment fitting the crime, it might make them think twice before lifting a hand against an innocent again. "THE AWFUL WRONGS AND SUFFERINGS FORCED UPON THE INNOCENT, HELPLESS, FAITHFUL ANIMAL RACE, FORM THE BLACKEST CHAPTER IN THE WHOLE WORLD'S HISTORY. (Edward Freeman, English historian.)

"Shame shame on the both parents for their lack of discipline and not instilling moral standards on this bratty 'rot' they exposed us."

Having seen first hand a child given all the proper tools to make the correct decisions in life and watch them choose otherwise, I cannot fault the parents without knowing their tale. If you get a chance, watch the movie, "The Good Son" 1993 with Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood. Those type of children DO exist.

I would love to personally take this MONSTER Cheyenne put her in the oven, chain it and set it to broil. I would dance a jig of glee as she screams and scratches at the door.

Thank you Robin-I would be dancing right beside you but I think we would be remiss not to include her buddy Whitney B. in the event.
