Visit Cambodia's number one tourist attraction, Angkor Wat, with the average tour guide and you'll probably leave the UNESCO World Heritage Site with your head swimming in dates, dimensions and unpronounceable names of kings.

Having visited the temples a few years ago, here are a couple of tips to make your experience more enjoyable. First, go during the monsoon season; it doesn't rain all the time but means there will be less tourists around. I found myself almost alone in one of the temples and it is a magical experience.
Second, watch a brief documentary about the history of the site beforehand - our hotel arranged a screening for us in the restaurant- so you can spend your time in the temples just absorbing the atmosphere.
