Fast-accumulating data seem to indicate that our close cousins, the Neanderthals, were much more similar to us than imagined even a decade ago. But did they have anything like modern speech and language? And if so, what are the implications

There is not much doubt they had the capacity for speech and that we still carry a tiny bit of Neanderthal DNA. The Denisovian man and the Neanderthal were strong and able to function well in their environments, and thanks to the genetic links, made it possible for the modern human to thrive.

I love these articles&seeing how they line up perfectly w/our oral histories...its amazing what my people know that has been proven by science

Of course they could ... many of my neighbors are Neanderthals and we speak to each other daily.

I first got turned on to the concept in the Jean Auel Earth children novels from 30-ish years ago (ooo how I hate aging myself that much)

Judging from the current populous and its actions, NEANDERTHAL nails it ... only in reverse. WE have regressed to their state ... how sad is that?
