Most people are ignorant of the crucial role the rainforests play in keeping the global climate stable, a survey has revealed.

Great story Marty - I have always been a strong avocat of the rainforests and trees -it is important to educate the public regarding the trees importance - and obviously we have a ways to go :( ...

Our experience shows that the best way to protect rain forests is to secure the rights of the communities that have always lived in and depended on them.

I agree. My sister saved the rain forest we grew up in by helping the local people understand what their rights are and what would happen to them once their rain forest was gone. Logging companies offer rain forest tribes cash in exchange for logging rights. Even a little cash seems like a lot to them, and they don't realize how much they will lose and how poor they will become without their rain forest so they often sign away their rain forest for a little cash. The more poverty they experience, the more willing they are to sign their rain forest away. So, yes, standing up for the rights of rain forest people is absolutely crucial to saving rain forests around the world.

I would agree. And in many cases the people must balance between saving the rainforest or getting the money to feed the kids.

One of the exciting things I see comming out of the intrest of solving the climate crisis is that the forests are becomming monitarily more valuable alive than dead! As it turns out, many of the locals can make more money selling there forests intact as "carbon credits" than they can by selling logging rights. I have even seen cases where locals are paid leases for their intact forest - they continue to receive an income as long as there is no logging taking place on their land. I see this as a win-win situation - the forest remains intact, and the locals still get an income (better than if they where forced to exploit their land). I see this as a creative solution to many problems...

What are we doing about it? We are destroying forests to grow corn for fuel - whose idea was that? We are destroying rain forests to grow crops for cattle - I know Care2 is flexitarian, the rest of America eats meat three meals a day.

Population continues to explode, increased demand for resources. I have made the personal commitment to family planning - I have no children, and plan on one child and adoption.

This should be taught in grade school and up. I asked around and it is true. Many people don't know why we need to save the rainforest in another country. In fact, they know little about the Amazon. TY for this. signed and spoutin off to everyone I know :)
