NEW YORK--From the goose that laid the golden egg to the race between the tortoise and the hare, Aesop's fables are known for teaching moral lessons rather than literally being true. But a new study says at least one such tale might really have happened.

LOL I think it's so funny that Christopher's last name is Bird!! I used to feed the crows at my old apartment. They land on the ground sometimes 6 at a time and I'd have gone around to the back of my apartment, where the porch was, and dump an entire half gallon zip-lock bag of saltines on the ground, drive back to my front door--in my electric wheelchair--and sit on my porch in wait of the crows...then here they come...swoopin' down cawin' at each other, vying for the saltines. One crow picked up 6 saltines, one at a time, ran to the edge of the ground and took off flying over the trees and river!! I learned how greedy crows can be...I became known as "The Crow Lady" around the neighborhood. Ahh...those were the good ol' days!! Thanks, Mich!!

Thanx Michelle. Cool story. I had heard that crows are capable of using tools, but this would tell me they can reason. Maybe there would be a career in politics for them.

neat reply Barb, thanks! Where I work there is a huge park with lots of trees where the rooks have taken up residence. Most times they are fairly solitary but in the spring and fall when they flock it gets a lot like Hitchcock's film "the Birds" - they're all cawing and wheeling and it is rather scary in the autumn evenings.

Karen, I'm not sure about politics - crows are smarter than that...
