What are we being prepared for? I find the use of V as a title for the series especially bothersome, since the movie by the name was about rebellion against a totalitarian government.

That was "V for Vendetta" Judy. This probably a remake of the TV Sci-Fi series that came out at least 25 years ago was also called "V" and which had a similar premise.
