She rarely leaves her area, she says. Nor do her girls, for fear of being kidnapped or raped."We only want a normal life," says Um Qasim, sitting in a bombed out building in Baghdad. She and others around have been saying that for years.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) released a report Jan. 1 that estimated there are 1.6 million internally displaced persons in Iraq. The report said that almost two-thirds, just over a million, live in Baghdad, more than half of them women or girls. The report pointed out that displaced women are more prone to rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Okay, Saddam Hussein was no one's nominee for Nice Guy
of the Year Award, but Iraq was such a peaceful country before
the invasion.
As my best friend says about George W. Bush, "that sonofabitch
broke the World".

The blame for this lies squarely on the shoulders
of Bush, Cheney, Blair, Rumsfeld, Rice, and on and
on and on.
The man in the photo above is only one year older than
I am. He looks old enough to be my grandfather. May God
bless him and all the other people of Iraq, who have had
this horror brought on them for no good reason, and certainly
for no cause of their own.
Thanks, Jackie.

Tim, Iraq was not such a peaceful place under Saddam for Kurds and Shias. Said that, it's still a pity for the family to suffer.

Sashko,
please name for me one country,
anywhere in the world, where it's
a peaceful place for 100% of the people,
100% of the time.

Your refusal to open your profile indicates
two things to me, and likely to everyone else
here:
1) You're afraid to die, and
2) You're afraid to die for what you believe in.

My heart breaks for you, for those two things.
Someone once said, I forget who, that what is
necessary for genuine living is resolutely staring
your own death and mortality in the face. If you've
never done that, you've never lived.
I see a frog-face at Care2, I see a coward.

Tim R:

You're right about Saddam, he may have been a tyrant but life under him was much better; no one went hungry, there was plenty of food for all Iraqis, and every Iraqi was guaranteed a free education...

Aramco World covered Iraq in one of their issues prior to that g_dd_m US INVASION (when every Iraqi farmer owned their seeds BEFORE BREMER GRANTED CARGIL AND MONSANTO THE PATENTS & RIGHTS TO THEIR HEIRLOOM SEEDS!!!!!

Tim: I think the real reason Sashko K refuses to open her file is because she's one of those Pentagon MOLES whose assignment is to aggressively attack perceived "oppositional attitudes" in forums, bulletin boards, chat rooms and on social sites like Facebook, and MySpace!
