Hemp, the world's premiere renewable natural resource, by journalist and commentator Hugh Downs speaking for ABC News radio out of New York in November, 1990. Mr. Downs did his homework exceedingly well for this report--he succeeded in including a great deal of useful information in the short timespan of only nine minutes, forty seconds. Seeking to leverage off the clarity of his research, nine footnotes have been added to the text to provide people with a cross-section of the reference material substantiating the facts Mr. Downs articulates.

HUGH DOWNS:

"from 1842 to 1890, extracts from hemp, was the 2nd most prescribed drug,

in the USA, with "NO" listed side effects".

I would like to thank you my good friend Scott for this article, as I am an advocate for hemp use, and medicianl marijuana. Bless you Hugh Downs for hipping everyone to the valuable uses of hemp, they should have never done away with it in the 50's. Dumb govt. It's an herb, just like camomile tea, and has valuable contents...not just to make clothes, but houses, among many other uses. Listen up people, "No side effects" got it? It's an herb. This is "Highly noted"..thanks again...And yes, I am all for hemp usage. And Medicinal Mary Jane.
Many blessings to all..

What A SHAME that (hahaha) REEFER MADNESS had such an IMPACT on the sheeple of that ERA; Ahhhh Bring Back Bette Davis and the Troops; Send in the Clowns! I remember fondly the Film, REEFER MADNESS; and know that it had the same Effect on Society of that day; as that Broadcast about Alien Invasion; Orson Wells? People are so Easily Swayed; and FEAR is the Catalyst that Cripples any Society. Thanks Again.

Imagine those who would feel better with the nausia from cancer and the drugs they pump into the body to kill cancer, if only the drug compainies didn't spend a fortune blocking it's sale from those who could use it..Imagine the taxes they could charge if it were legal..imagine....no hypocrisy

The legal farming of Hemp would be a boon to US farmers who are struggling.
At this time, several states are fighting the DEA over the right to farm industrial hemp, however, the DEA sees hemp at pot and is locked in their decision not to allow hemp farming. Wake up DEA, hemp is a valuable resource the world can no longer ignore.
The debate on legalisation of pot is heating up (pardon the pun), with more citizens realising the benefits of both medical usage and recreational use verses big pharma drugs and alcohol. We all know there are no lasting negative side effects from using pot, but until citizens take a firm stance and demand this herb be legalised, all who use pot will be condemed to being named outlaws. And while many don't care about that labling, it still flies in the face that many of our prison's inhabitants are pot smokers who got caught.
The time is now to stand up for our rights as American citizens and say no mas; no more will we allow big pharma, tobacco and alcohol to dictate what we can and cannot use.

Right on Kim, you go girl, you got it on the ball! Good for you for taking a stand and having the courage to speak up about the benefits of hemp and its usage for all of us on this planet! Bless ya darlin...Your fab! Imagine allowing our farmers to make money that they don't have just by helping others on this planet with their goods, how great is that? I also want to thank Lynda L.as she states the truth.

The only way that we will be able to see this really happen is if we get a lot of representatives and congress to legalize the production of hemp.

In the US production of hemp is illegal. However good and versatile it is this is there is this great bane on its name.

For the love of our 'democracy' please read, take note and share this news post with everyone you can. http://www.care2.com/news/member/469277529/670942

As a hospice nurse, I have seen the positive therapeutic effects of marijuana. Our mission is to assist people with life-limiting conditions to a peaceful and dignified death. It helps, and the pill form of THC is useless in most cases (only 30-35% is absorbed through the intestinal tract-and it takes up to 40 minutes- vs. 95-100% through inhalation-which tends to have onset almost immediately).
I've even heard physicians ask family members if they can "get some pot" for Mom or Dad, Granma or Grandpa.

One of the reasons that the FDA will not approve medicinal marijuana is that no drug company has submitted a study to demonstrate its efficacy. No drug company will spend the millions of dollars needed for the study, because they'll never get a patent on a weed. The government will not subsidize a study due to the existance of only "annecdotal" stories of success. Bottom line: nobody will make any money. Vicious Circle.

I should also mention one of the reasons the growing of Hemp became outlawed in this country. Randolph Hearst began a campaign in earnest (using his newspapers) against Hemp in the 1930's because of a patent he had just purchased. Newspapers were ugly and messy back then. Hearst had just spend a sizable hunk of change on a bleaching process that not only brightened the newspaper, but also helped the ink stay on better.

Just about that time, hemp was discovered to be great for newspaper. It did not allow the ink to run, and the paper was naturally brighter (it didn't need the chemical process).

Hearst worried that he would lose out on his expensive investment (other newspapers would have to pay him for the chemical process and/or purchase papers treated by the process-from HIM).

REEFER MADNESS was a film he actively (and financially) supported. The propaganda it generated (as well as certain campaign contributions) got the growing and cultivation of hemp moved to illegal status.

This is a tragedy on many levels, not the least of which is that the process of making newspaper from hemp would be far less expensive AND ENVIRONMENTALLY friendly.

Such a shame.

Thanks, Scott. And thank you all for letting me share. Maybe some people will wake-up.
In peace & Love,
Lisa

I enjoyed this article and the post, it breaks my heart that all we folks have known all of this for so long, and of course the "BIG" folks know it too, they just dont want REAL good solutions, its all about the money making.

I think its a shame too Lisa

Hemp rope was a pretty standard fare in the olden days...clothing and food (lots of EFAs) good stuff..save the trees..yay. I hope things pick up again and happens. I don't smoke, bit if I had cancer..I'd be on it. I think alcohol and cigarettes bigger killers myself. Those evil paints I think have killed a few of my braincells...I would love to see them ol laws on the books now. Screw the coal and nuke power, and with almost everyone supporting big pharma...getting evil side effects, anxiety and suicidal..I'd rather be around high people..and tease them with yummy brownies.

Thank You Scott. I have known you could make cloths and rope from it for years. But never heard it could help with energy. Someone has sold out to the coal companies with all the talk of clean coal being the answer.
Its not hat you can smoke hemp, you can't. Though the whole drug war in is immoral to me. Throwing someone in jail for the drug of their choice, will never make us the society we could be.

Jack Herrar has the whole complete plan to run the country on hemp. Check out his website: http://www.jackherer.com/
It should be grown in every state and every window and yard of everyone who needs it. This could release us from the oil slavery we are being controlled by. Great comments, thanks you Scott.

There are two groups here, which many of you may be interested in joining: The Medical Marijuana Experience -- which is JUST WHAT IT SAYS, a SUPPORT GROUP for those wishing to share THEIR POSITIVE EXPERIENCES OF THE BENEFITS OF CANNABIS/MEDICAL MARIJUANA; and, Hopeful Hempsters, Hoping to get Hemp back in the Mainstream. Both groups also favor ALL DE-CRIMINALIZATION OF ALL CANNABIS USED FOR ANY PURPOSE.
The 'Drug Wars' are a plain FRAUD. They have gone on longer, and with worse effects, than Alcohol Prohibition ever did.
The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAS THE LARGEST PRISON POPULATION OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD; both in terms of ABSOLUTE NUMBERS; and in terms of PROPORTION OF THE POPULATION. The 'Drug Wars' have SPAWNED A PRIVATIZED PRISON INDUSTRY where prisoners are FORCED TO LABOR FOR ALMOST NOTHING; and are DENIED MEDICAL CARE because it is "too expensive" for the privately-run prison to provide. Denied DECENT, HEALTHY FOOD often, too.
THERE ARE MORE PRISONERS HELD IN U.S. JAILS, THAN IN ANY DICTATORSHIP EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. FACT! More than Russia or China! Surprised?!!

And REAL murderers and rapists and child molesters ARE OFTEN RELEASED EARLY FROM THE OVERCROWDED PRISONS; because NON-VIOLENT DRUG "OFFENDERS" ARE FILLING THE CELLS. Since most of these "drug offenders" are young, poor, and NON-WHITE, we don't hear about them that much! AND THE MURDERERS, RAPISTS AND CHILD MOLESTERS WHO ARE FREED WHILE THE DRUG "OFFENDERS" REMAIN BEHIND BARS FOR YEARS, ARE FREE TO CONTINUE TO COMMIT MORE HEINOUS CRIMES -- AND DO, IF YOU READ THE DAILY NEWS.
Families are broken up, kids traumatized and taken away from loving parents, sick people in beds and wheelchairs yanked out and literally THROWN into cells to die -- ALL BECAUSE OF THE STUPID DRUG LAWS. THIS HAS TO END! NOW!

So, join one of Care2's Legalization groups -- there are several -- or join another group on- or off-line, such as NORML, or LEAP {LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION -- there are MANY policemen who HATE the 'Drug Laws' and the INSANITY of DIVERTING FUNDS AND ENERGY FROM REAL CRIME!}.

DOMINOES ARE FALLING IN THE U.S.of A.....
STATE BY STATE! BY STATE BY STATE!!!

Medical Marijuana Bill Clears Senate Committee in Illinois

State Senate Passes Marijuana Bill, Vermont

New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy

Rhode Island Medical Marijuana Act

GREAT NEWS!!!

These are all articles that can be NOTED -- sorry, tho, I don't have the URL number!

TWELVE STATES HAVE LEGALIZED MEDICAL MARIJUANA/CANNABIS.
It looks like a few more SOON WILL HAVE LEGALIZED MEDICAL MARIJUANA.

The problem is -- THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STILL TAKES IT UPON ITSELF TO RAID AND HARASS AND JAIL MEDICAL MARIJUANA USERS AND PROVIDERS, EVEN IN THOSE STATES WHERE MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS NOW LEGAL!

WRITE YOUR CONGRESSCRITTERS; AND ALL THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES, ALL OF THEM, TELLING THEM YOU *INSIST* THEY TAKE A STAND ON: NO * MORE * RAIDS * ON * LEGAL * MARIJUANA * PATIENTS!!!!!!!!
These are people who are DOUBLY HELPLESS against the Feds -- first, because the ARE IN TERRIBLE SICKNESS AND PAIN TO WANT TO TAKE THE RISKS ENSUED BY USING MARIJUANA; and, secondly, BECAUSE THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO DO SO OPENLY, AS THE LAWS IN THEIR OWN STATES SAY THEY CAN. Not only are the Medical Marijuana USERS at huge risk from the Feds, at having themselves put in jail and their FAMILIES OFTEN BROKEN UP; but, THEIR DOCTORS AND CAREGIVERS, AND THOSE WHO SUPPLY THEM WITH THE MARIJUANA ITSELF -- often FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS WHO DEARLY LOVE THEM -- are PUT AT ENORMOUS RISK BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RAIDS.
The government IS ENGAGING IN GRATUITOUS CRUELTY by waging a "War" against HELPLESS SICK AND ELDERLY PATIENTS AND THOSE WHO LOVE THEM AND TAKE THE TROUBLE TO CARE FOR THEM; LOCKING PEOPLE UP AT OUR EXPENSE, THAT POSE NO RISK TO YOU OR TO ME OR TO SOCIETY. LOCKING THEM UP FOR YEARS, WITHOUT THEIR MEDICINE FOR THEIR PAIN. SOME EVEN HAVE DIED, IN GREAT AGONY, DEPRIVED OF THEIR MEDICINES. A DEATH SENTENCE FOR DARING TO USE MARIJUANA TO FEEL BETTER.

WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT'S POINT IN ALL OF THIS PERSECUTION OF THE SICK AND THE WEAK AND THE ELDERLY? There IS a point, indeed there IS -- IT IS TO INTIMIDATE US ALL INTO BLIND OBEDIENCE. Just like 9/11, IT IS TO INDUCE A PERMANENT STATE OF FEAR -- and "respect" for GOVERNMENT POWER TO RULE EVEN THE SMALLEST DETAILS OF OUR LIVES.

Another use of hemp which I have not yet seen addressed is it's potential as a source of biofuel. It has been argued that biofuel production from corn has resulted in a rise in food prices. I believe we can dismiss these arguments against corn-based biofuel by spreading the awareness of the potential for a hemp-based one. Hemp produces more biomass per square foot than any other, with both a near perfect food (seeds) and fiber for rope and clothing as perks. I am fairly confident that if Canada were to pick up on hemp's potential as a biofuel resource, we would quickly see other counties, perhaps even the US following suit. Much of the research into processing hemp plants for cellulose and fiber has been done, but was brought to a halt when both DOW, who had just invented nylon, and Hearst, who had just bought up huge chunks of forest land, and was the owner of most major newspapers at the time, put Marijuana in there sites to protect thier financial interests.

Imagine if we locked up the child molesters and stop the nonsense of "statute of limitation on child rape...and left all that room in the prisons for them and let out the millions who just smoked pot for any reason..Imagine the lack of hypocrisy for locking up the real monsters instead of those who are ill or those who find smoking it helps them relax..

First off, "hemp" and "pot" are seperate issues. Saying that, I am for both. Hemp and pot grew wild in most of the US and was smoked freely by our parents and grandparents. Hemp is a great product that could save us all money, land, trees, etc. I know pot helps many ill people as it has in my own family. Many cancer patients "starve" to death before the cancer gets them because they can't hold food down. Have you noticed, our war on drugs seem to be laid flatly on the laid back pot smokers. A good safe raid. Get the other sh#@ off the streets as it is horrible garbage destroying families and children and marriages. I know no one will listen but they keep trying to legalize both and the loudest jerks seem to be the only ones heard. Too many people don't know enough fact about pot and hemp and there lies the problem. Ignorance. Let's get a petition going. I don't smoke it but I think it should be legal. I hate alcoholics far worse than pot smokers. Never been beat up by a smoker.
