The February 1938 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine heralded hemp as the "new billion-dollar crop," saying it had 25,000 uses. Today, it is a base element for textiles, paper, construction materials, car parts, food and body care products.

How come a majority of people put faith in government to save the environment when the same government is so ignorant on this, and many other personal rights issues? The answers to our problems do not lie within our government!

and who says it's *not* a panacea??

solving our tree, oil, and ... god knows what else - okay - it doesn't solve our potable water issues, or stop the destruction of the Ozone, but give it time! I'm sure it can play a significant role in there somewhere

From another article on how hemp can help our economy, comes this lighthearted, though not exactly factual, illustration of the hemp/marijuana silliness.

Child, “Can I have some grape juice?”
Parent, “No. You can't have any wine.”
Child, “Sorry, I wanted grape juice.”
Parent, “I know, but you see wine has alcohol in it.”
Child, “OK, but I wanted grape JUICE.”
Parent, “Sweetheart, wine is grape juice. So, no. Please stop asking or you will be punished.”

Regarding the atmosphere, though not ozone directly,...
When biomass fuel, such as that made from hemp or corn, burns, it produces CO2, the same as fossil fuel, but during the growth cycle of the plant, photosynthesis removes as much CO2 from the air as burning the biomass adds. Simple science. It wouldn't exactly suck the pollution out of the air from all that oil we have burned, but it wouldn't contribute to it either. At all. Sustainability.

Considering that up until the end of WWII, it was illegal for North American farmers not to go grow this herb which has existed on this continent for centuries, it is ludicrous that farmers are not allowed to produce a crop which has been used around the world for eons and is the mainstay of health for millions. Time to iradicate the fear syndrom about this marvelous and multi-purpose plant. Too many cultures have been destroyed by the So-called powers because it works, people who grow and use it are healthy, happy and not interested in closing their minds to the wonders of nature.Power to the truth and may the Herb be protected and allowed to flourish everywhere.. Peace in Our Quest For Truth

Wrote my congressman. She wrote back to me that the plant was a 'gateway to harder drugs'! I guess that's the official line.

We have our work cut out for us. There is a small group that continues to ruin it for the rest of us, i.e. High Times magazine and dope heads. What we need is proof that hemp does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol, that it is not a drug.

If it wasn't for high Times which once was illegal to own here in BC. and "pot heads", and the man who wrote The eEmperor wears new Clothes, we'd be all in the loony bin being forced to take mind bending pa\harmaceuticals. Don't be so blind. There are people who've lost their lives fighting for that herb to be recognized and appreciated for what is is, my ancestors included.

this is my answer to the official line--marijuana, is not a gateway to harder drugs -it being illegal is the gate way to harder drugs- think about it -where does one get marijuana-from a DRUG DEALER that will sell any garbage to anybody and does not limit themselves to the herb and always/mostly has the other stuff on hand , or is in the company of those who will or do get that other trash that they call harder drugs- It being illegal is the reason it is a gateway drug -anything else is propaganda

Sorry, as a life long advocate for legalization of a substance that has been wrongly vilified for too many years I cannot and will not support this endever without their support of lifting the boat for all.
This plant has been wrongly classified. They want our help they include us or go it alone.

Faith, good insight there. I agree that it is the illegality that makes it a gateway. However I would say that the loss of trust is more the cause. Anti-Drug commercials and school programs tell kids that all drugs are bad, they make you dumb, etc. When these kids see others getting high, and it is not what they were told, everything else they were told is questioned. We, as a society, are lying to our children, and when they find out, all of the wisdom we could and have passed on is questioned. This opens the door to experimentation, with both damaging and highly addictive drugs, and restricted behaviors.

Ronald, the recognition of hemp as a cash crop entirely different from marijuana does no damage to the image of marijuana, nor to efforts to decriminalize it. The only damaging repercussions of legalizing hemp would be that no one could grow a marijuana plant outdoors without it being pollinated by the hemp. Result, VERY seedy weed, and those seeds would be no good for anything other than food. But very healthy, tasty food it is.

Gee, I don't know why PHARMA hasn't latched onto the idea and used their spin-doctors to make it sound like the cure for EVERYTHING from the common cold to an itchy crotch! Heck, they make a killing,(no pun intended), on all the other garbage they market, that IS very dangerous!!!
