In June 2003, the Bush administration nixed a report on the dangers of gabbing while driving. Six months later, a Michigan 12-year-old became another statist

If my comments here offend you, just get off your cell phone for a minute~SERIOUSLY~~~
Until we start treating this extreme form of driving distraction like DWI there will be more statistics--perhaps your loved ones and friends~This is a plague sponsored by corporate America in the name of protecting greed. Enforcement of the toothless laws designed to protect us from driving while using a cell phone is spotty at best and often takes an actual accident to engender the issuing of a ticket for this. That's how DWI used to e treated many years ago, and as sure as we're sitting here, the number of casualties can only rise. Here in NY I think the Maximum fine amount for this is $150. This is surely a JOKE by our esteemed legislators to appease the growing outcry on this with a punishment that won't deter anyone from doing it and endangering their fellow drivers and their passengers. There must be points on the license and a fine in the four figures for each offense, even the first one, to start making a dent in the public attitude that this is a tolerable practice. Current anemic laws on this amount to criminal neglect on a societal level, all to bow down to corporate interests to perpetuate a clearly dangerous practice in the name of making a buck.

Again, if I've offended anyone, too bad, because the amount of grief that you'd suffer from an auto accident caused by this really preventable driving distraction will be infinitely greater than your disagreement with my remarks.

You didn't offend me Cal, I 100% agree with you. Just talking on the damn thing while driving is bad enough but how about a heated argument while driving? I work for a doctor and we have people call in on their cells checking their schedules and try to make an appointment. I'm waiting for the day that I hear the accident occuring while I'm talking to someone. If I have to use my cell I pull over. And worst yet is those that are texting while driving. Drive while driving, that's it. That thing your sitting in is a many thousand pound bullet capable of causing multiple deaths including yours.

It's illegal in the UK and in a similar article I produced a lot of statistics from an American company showing how many people died because of talking or texting whilst on the phone.

I agree that punishments must be there for people talking on the phone but, I just cannot conceive how someone can drive and text at the same time without loosing control of one of the two things! When I drive and the phone rings I just do not answer till I can pull over and return the call... is it that hard to do? Anyways, great post.

People that drive and text/talk on their cell phones are probably the same bunch of repulsive idiots that babble away while on the toilet (do you honestly think people can't hear you conducting business or flushing?) Cell phone use should be banned while driving. Period.
