Pro-Israeli lobbyists here won the support of 77 senators (out of 100) for a letter sent to President Barack Obama that urged him to "press Arab leaders" to consider making dramatic, upfront peace overtures to Israel.

Arab leaders from King Hussein to King Abdulla already rejected Obama's call and refused any overtures to Israel. Besides, both Fatah and Hamas reject peace with Israel anyway, so no matter what other Arab countries do anyway.

How is Jerusalem a holy city? Why can't Israelis live in all parts of their city?

Gillian, Mohammed saw Jerusalem in a dream, and so it became holy to Muslims. Besides, they build a mosque on the place where The King Solomon Temple stood, and that's the second reason - that holy place.

The article is written by some ignoramus - he doesn't know about Israeli withdrawal from Gaza done by Sharon's will. Is this not a geasture to Palestinian Arabs?

"Why can't Israelis live in all parts of their city?"??? Why can't Palestinians live in all parts of their city? Answer because they are being thrown out by Israel, homes stolen for squatters aka settlers...same thing.Do you actually think that Jerusalem should only be jewish?? Those who are now very busy digging up the foundations of Al Aqsa mosque in order to destroy it are the same people who want to rebuild solomans temple which is not even on that site but stood on the wailing wall this being the last remnant of it.

It was the Romans that destroyed solomans temple. Umar the Great or Farooq the Great was the most powerful of the four Rashidun Caliphs and one of the most powerful and influential Muslim rulers. It was Umar who for the first time in 500 years since expulsion of Jews from the Holy Land, allowed them to practice their religion freely and live in Jerusalem.
Umar himself had the ruined temple area cleaned up as the Christians used it as the city rubbish dump. He told them to claim their holy place and continue to worship there. The open space infront of the wailing wall is where the temple was. Not underneath the Dome of the Rock or Al Aqsa.

In short there's no need or justification for undermining/destroying historic islamic sites. Jerusalem is an important cultural, historical, interfaith centre shared by Christians, Muslims as well as Jews.
How long before Christian holy sites will be the next target for obliteration?

Jackie, nobody limits Palestinians to live where they want in Jerusalem. And Jews also can't be limited as well.

Jackie, the Western Wall means that the Temple stood to the East of it, i.e. exactly where the mosque was built. All the tunnels underneath it were used by the priests and are described in details in books. It's not some excavation under the mosque.

Actually, the mosque was built deliberately on the very spot where The King Solomin Table stood - there is a concept in Islam recommending building mosques on places holy to other nations. Another known mosques were built on the tops of ruins of a church, and on tops of Hindu Temple.

Nobody wants to blow up the mosque - Israelis could blow it up when they captured it from Jordanians, and they didn't. No sites have to be destroyed.

Jackie, what do you say about Taliban destroying Budda sculptures in Afganistan, and Palestinians destroying the Tomb of Joseph ?

Sherbet... no one can persuade an Arab Muslim to switch off his toggle switch when it comes to Israel... especially when they are promised seven non existent virgins... in paradise...
