The Potter phenomenon has been blamed for a surge in the number of people buying owls, emulating the young magician who keeps a snowy owl called Hedwig as a pet.Now an animal sanctuary has opened on the Isle of Wight to help cope with the problem of owls

For cripe's sake... why do films have to create such imbecilic fads? Poor owls, good that someone is looking after them. Thanks Cal.

People will always have fads because it is fun to have something different. I love animals but would never have a pet in a cage or have an animal (such as an owl) which should live in the wild unless there was an excellent reason such s a broken wing or leg. My cats are wild enough when dinner is late!

If ever in the Middle Tennessee area, visit Owl's HIll. It is a 160 acre sanctuary located in Williamson County. Check out their website at owlshill.org...Thank you for this article...

It's the seller of these birds that should have a finger point at them. After all they sold them to people. Thanks, Glenda

I think its great that a film taught children to love this animal. (owls have been long persected as EVIL BIRDS.

Its not the fault of Harry Potter... its people who choose to market the love for the owl. Same thing as the Easter Bunny... people run out and buy they around Easter, the novelty wears off, and the animal is neglected.

I can't believe that owls were even for sale in the first place! They are wild animals. Would a stuffed toy not do? I mean come on this is terrible. More exploitation of wild animals

Always the stupid movies that attract kids, and the stupid parents get the pets for their kids...So wrong...

Why don't the movies advertise Shelter Animals????

I hate it when these films start these ridiculous pet trends. These fools buy the animal, then realize they can't take care of the poor creature, and then it's just discarded like a piece of rubbish.I still remember that film 101 Dalmatians, and the poor little dalmatians that got discarded.Unacceptable!

Ya know...I keep thinking that parents are becoming more and more like *MORONS* everyday. If Hollywood glamorizes it, parents *HAVE* to give *THE MOST POPULAR* animal to their children... without much thinking about the animal's life at all.

Sheesh... this is just disgusting!

my thought exactly, Ancil, another animal hard to handle, it takes a special person for some creatures, parents are so careless, if they can shut the kid up by buying something, they too often do.
beautiful owls, ty Cal for the post.

they give no thought to the owls, only to the kids i want it ,i want it!!why can't people realize and be aware, that even though it's in a movie it's a wild creature!leave them free,as they were intended to be ! . thanks Cal

This is what I hate. At first it is wonderful to have an animal or bird. Next thing the novelty wears off and the poor animals must suffer.

Ditto for my friend Tierney's remark as to how are owls sold in the FIRST place? Also, let's not forget all the bunnies parents buy their kids for Easter because it's just so darn cute until they realize that they are living creatures that require love and care and that's a pain so they get dumped at the shelter where they will be killed.

were in the hell do you buy and owl from? don't blame the movies. people give into their kids and get them what ever in the hell they want. they would rather buy them things than teach them values. people need to know realality from fantasy and unfortunatly some are too dumb to know the diffrence.

If it didn't get out their for the children to see, (i.e. 101 Dalmations, Harry Potter, Marley) people wouldn't be looking for these animals...there are a ton of problems with kids see these movies, and Daisy you and other comments are right..parents SHOULD NOT BE going out and purchasing these animals or their child ...especially the exotic ones, Owls are NOT pets.

But, this is the sad age where parents, when they have the money get their children anything they want, then when the child tires of it, out it goes. IPods, new text phones, OWLS????? What next...so happy that these owls are getting someplace safe.

This is SOOOOOO WRONG!!!!

Irresponsiblity is key here and critically showing the need for laws to be in place protecting all animals! it breaks my heart as i know it does everyone here to know that such incredible wildlife - any species - can be bought and 'dumped' ... rejected when the fad becomes tiresome!
Try to get a kid to clean a litter box for goodness sake ... not happening!

Disney type marketing trivialises the responsibility of animal keepership and I bet the next abandoned unwanted animals will be guinea pigs after the latest offering. If parents are so stupid to give in to the transitory fashionable whims off their offspring one would question there suitability to even have children in the first place. All symptoms of the I want gimme gimme culture sadly permeating every part of society. All Qudos to the sanctuary on the Isle of Wight for helping the owls!

I am a huge Potter fan, but I sure as hell did not go running out thinking I had to buy an owl. Really what parents allowed their children to have owls? It was the same with 8 below and another movie with huskies in, there was a sudden fad for huskies and the same with the 101 dalmation movies. Some people are really stupid, thankfully there are people out there to help with these poor abandoned owls. Take care,

Keeping birds in cages is a terrible thing. I hate the sight of it because they chould be flying up high in the sky, without a care in the world, free. Just one of the ways in which human kind steals freedom!
