The Federal government should not be involved at all. Like all regulations, it should be a states' rights issue.

I so totally agree with this. It should be totally outlawed to drive while talking on a cell phone, texting, and so forth. It is more dangerous almost than drinking and driving! There is NO way someone can have their eyes and minds on the road and drive watching out for yourself and others and texting, talking on a phone. I hope this bill passes

In the UK this has been law for several years. There is information on this from American inurance companies showing the relationship between using mobile phones/texting and accidents.

betsy: you're only half right. when the feds want to change a state's transport policies, they withhold fed. highway funds, which is what is being proposed now and is an entirely legal, effective, and appropriate action. change is never easy and usually costs money, so it only makes sense for the feds to provide an incentive to change. phone use by any method while driving, even hands free, has been repeatedly found be dangerous, comparable to drunk driving, and its ban should be made explicit is strong distracted driving laws.

I live in the far extreme north of Alaska, and you woldn't think that person with 2 brain cells to rub together would yak and text on their cell phone when it's -40 degrees below zero. This last Jan. I was pulling out of the parking lot of my workplace when a woman pulled out of her parking place right in front of me, and came to a stop. I waited, waited...waited for about 3 minutes...I finally put my second pair of gloves bak on my hands....unbuckled my seatbelt...got out of my truck and walked up to her passenger window...all the while there were about 7 rogs waiting behind mine...all of us waiting to go home.

As I get to her window...I see thru her driver's window..over her shoulder...and low and behold...she's texting away laughing her fool head off.....
I get to her window, and knock on the glass, and she tirns her head just laughing her A** off. She rolls down her window, and I say: "Do you know it's illegal to drive and talk..text at the same time when your driveing in this state?"
She say:"I'm not driving I am parked and texting...."
I say...." Lady...I got me and about a dozen other drivers who see you, and you are in the middle of the road blocking traffic...this isn;t the parking lot..this is the main road out...no snow...and you can see the the lane lines....
She says:..."Bull ****"."
I say..."Get out of your car since you won't look out your rearview window...."

She get's out of her car..see's the backed up traffic.....and screams..... :"You all are a bunch ******* a******.....
She gets into her car ...and screams out of the parking lot...around the corner...and right into the back end of a police car.......
LOL...Need I say more???
The best laugh I had all winter.....Welcome to Interior Alaska......

Mobiles should be confined to the handbag in transit... It just goes to show that cell phones are like cigarettes... use need it every few minutes or so..

Where the H*ll did good ole Common Sense go? Just stay off the damn phone & texting. Driving is a privilege & comes with responsibility I'd like to take these chatters & beat their heads in with their mobiles.
