I remember reading years ago how the Japanese took what we call "trash," compacted it like we transform our old clunkers into large chunks of metal, then they heated the results to a temperature that guaranteed safety from bacteria, etc. Chemicals could, or did present bio-hazards but the U.S. has solved all of our leaching problems like into streams, rivers, lakes and drinking water. But if these "blocks" could be made safe for building; certainly not skyscrapers, but smaller buildings, you could solve two problems at once. Haven't heard a word about it since; maybe there were stability problems later or it wasn't feasible or, it worked and is still working!
