The news should concentrate on the local races effecting the local people, this is silly relating the situation to the national stage. Cal, thank you but this is a rather strange opener for your usually great news.

Dear Bee Hive Lady,
Respectfully I couldn't help but to say that this is important because whether or not the races are local or not, ithe outcome does have an affect on you no matter what State you reside in. These are the people that make up our Congress as a whole who is voting on major issues on "We the People's" behalf. Who is elected determines who's voice gets heard. Which is another reason I love Care2.com. Just had to add that. Have a Blessed day!

A Democratic loss in any of these races is not a reflection on the President. Yes, he may have campaigned for the Democrats but in the upstate NY race, the Republican candidate pulled out and endorsed the Democrat. I believe there is a candidate in that race from the conservative party also. People may think that John Corizine isn't able to fulfill his duties as governor of New Jersey. He was involved in a horrible accident and was badly injured. There are many states that vote a split ticket. At this stage in politics, it really takes more that a victory of one party or another to measure how a president is perceived. Look at those same elections during the Bush administration. President Obama hasn't even been in office for 1 year and it wouldn't be fair to judge his merits on these elections. I too, thought this was a rather strange departure from Cal's usualy stories, especially as the lead story.

Personally speaking, this is not a direct fireback to Democrats and Obama, though it may be an indirect result to Obama presidential campaign.

Traditionally, Democrats win when there is heavy turnout, while Republicans do when it is low. Obama' campaign energized a heavy turnout, in particular in the youth and minorities.

In this current off year election, voter turnout is low and in particularly consevative regions like Virginia, the favor will be GOP directed.

Virginia is not an indicater of anything other than which party is iin the White House, Virginia nearly always elects a Governor of the party not in the White House and when you add to that the fact that 55+% of the voters in NJ and VA indicated that Obama was not a consideration in their voting, this election is not some sort of anti-Obama vote. Despite the super massive egos of the Democratic and Republican National Committes and all the BS from pundits State election turnouts and votes are more focused on the problems facing a particular state than the national issues.

Any hope that anybody had for a government takeover of health care just ended. Virginia doesn't indicate anything, but New Jersey does. Democrats in congress will not vote for an expansion of government in sufficient numbers to pass any public option. A third party would be nice, as I'm not a big Republican fan, but this is beginning to resemble 1993 in more ways than one.

Sorry, I like you guys and am not writing this to irritate anybody, but it is what it is. In Virginia, I did not vote for McDonnell but I was in the minority, by almost 20 points.
