Persecuted because they were doing their jobs.... That's precisely what has happened to two U.S. Border agents who were convicted and sentenced to 11 and 12 year prison terms for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler who had crossed our border illegally and phys

I used to travel to Mexico for business. A US company had manufacturing in Nogalas Mexico. To travel from Mexico to the US, you had to go through a structure like a "toll plaza" that you would see on any toll road. While one car is at the booth, the next car is stopped outside of the "plaza" by a stop light. When we
asked the customs agent why we were stopped short of the "plaza", he told us it was because they have had gun battles at the crossing (so it is a safety issue), and they need the extra room to search the car
and detain the people if necessary.

Later that week we were at the crossing about 5th or 6th in line to reach the plaza. All of a sudden there was alot of shouting from another lane, and additional agents ran out of the building next to
the plaza. We heard popping noises and determined they were gun shots. Next a little ping a a small vibration on our car. The customs agents caught the guy after wounding him in the leg. The brought him
into the building. After we went through the plaza and re-entered the US we pulled into the parking lot to look at the car. It had a small bullit hole in the right rear quarter panel. We also saw the customs
agents take packages (I assumed drugs) out of the car and into the building.

This is a true story....

When the incident first occured I read some disturbing reports about these two border guards. They have since been played up as unfairly convicted but I'm not so sure that's the case. Since the man they shot was a drug smuggler it makes it easier to see them as bravely doing their job but it's not clear to me that they actually knew what he was and might just as easily shot a person only trying to find work to feed his family. Still I do think the sentences are too long.

So then, smuggling drugs into another country to sell in the name of 'work to feed his family' is honorable?
