Woodland caribou herds in Canada are declining, and tar sands development is a big part of the reason why. But Canada's national and provincial governments know what do about that: Kill the wolves.

There has GOT to be a hidden agenda here.

Has Sarah Palin been in Canada lately?

Of course they do this! For a country with so much beautiful wildlife, they certainly have ot yet grown any brains! Special interest whores rule! Seems like this is happening everywhere these days! And Canada has the nerve to push to get their dirty pipeline in the US! GO AWAY CANADA - WE WILL NOT GO TO YOUR COUNTRY NOR SUPPORT YOUR INTERESTS!

I think that what needs to happen is for humanity to restrain its own numbers and demands on nature. But I am not sure that the economic system, with its addiction to growth, will allow this to happen. I like the ideas of CASSE at http://steadystate.org for improvements to the economic system, to create a more sustainable world.

The Canadian government (at least the Conservative Party) is as clueless as the United States government when it comes to the environment. Caribou herds are declining because of climate change. Wolves merely keep their prey populations in check. Unlike humans, they do not take more than they need.

No hope of habitat restoration with the oil and gas barons in charge.

selling asbestos is illegal in canada, but it is a ok to sell it to developing nations. canada thrives on harming life... from killing seals to under regulated food inspection to selling toxins to anyone uneducated enough to purchase it. kill animals to push and sell dirty energy. clear rivers and pollute lakes to run a pipeline anything to make a buck, and if anyone says anything shut them up though intimidation, there is a very cozy relationship between government and industry and its time to say enough.. no matter were on earth despots seek to destroy life..
we must light up the darkness for knowledge is not power its empowering lets all be empowered to change. life has value beyond measure
Peace and Love

Not again. I thought they did studies and found that the wolves counted for less than ten percent of the Carabou. Removing the wolves will seriously upset the balance of the ecology of the area no doubt about it. People always think that they can reinvent the wheel every couple of years.

they should kill some hunters instead, surely responsible for the inbalance in the ecosystem

for a relevant article check out: Wasser et al. 2011. The influences of wolf predation, habitat loss, and human activity on caribou and moose in the Alberta oil sands. Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment 2011; 9(10): 546–551, doi:10.1890/100071 a few points from that peer-reviewed article: 1) wolves in that area prefer deer to caribou and will track and eat after deer preferentially, 2) caribou only made up about 10% of wolf diet (65% deer), 3)it is HUMAN ACTIVITY & DISTURBANCE related to oil exploration that significantly corresponds to physiological stress in the caribou and human use along oil exploration roads that are having a negative impact on the caribou, not the wolves.

I always thought Canada was so much more ethical and rational than the US in it's approach to wolf management. I guess I was wrong, given the number of Canadian wolf petitons I've signed. Pity Canadian wolf management seems as unjust as wolf management is in Montana, where I live. Of course, I know it isn't the Canadian people who support slaughtering wolves. Our Montana FWP commissioners pander to Ranchers and hunters:
Please sign this petition for our Montana wolves. Not that it will do any good since this is such a backward state, full of wolf haters.

Stupid is as Stupid does! When all else fails, blame the Wolves, don't even check into anything else that is most likely the problem. Proven fact that Wolves only kill the Sick! Sounds to me that these threatened Wolves should be let loose on these Politicans, cause they sure sound SICK TO ME!
