After a series of bans on game shows and dance contests, Chinese television now faces new restrictions on foreign programming. But even beyond its wariness of the outside world, Beijing doesn't understand that stifling popular culture can eventually kill

Interesting article, but it focused too much on programming quality issues and not on the real issue of censorship.

The Chinese government has been going too far for a long time and finally the people will get tired and revolt. Just look at the middle east. Gaddafi is the most famous one to have the people turn on him. What is also scary is we are in debt to China, so when they fall we may fall with them and even farther than we are right now!!!

China has always been good at dictating how things will go or not go. People who live there have gone from one extreme to another if they are old enough they will recall various censors, bannings, of one thing or another.
I think many TV programs we have in this Country are trash, I wouldn't want them banned, but I wish more people would change the channel and learn and enjoy from some better quality of programs that are offered.

The title says it all. China is so immersed in the need to censor/control every aspect of private life that they don't think their citizens have the brains to figure out what is going on in the world.

I'm all for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Information. China has always stifled it's people. They are afraid that as Western-style ethics emerge, so will Western-style thinking. The freedom to think for oneself is the first step on the journey to Liberation.

How can anyone outside China really begin to even speculate on their thought process?

China has always done that, it just doesn't get reported a lot of the time

Until Mainland China ditches their Communists, preferably by killing the lot off, and accepts the Taipei government back in Beijing, I will not respect their actions or censorship nor acknowledge ANY debt to them. Communism is a disease and should be exterminated! Mao Zedong was a liar, fraud, traitor, and murderer!

Thanks for the article. I have faith that China will change despite the governments best efforts.
