Cal i'm not the least bit surprised given the Chinese are once again 'fracking' in another country, this time New Guinea!
While tons of toxic waste spills into the bay killing the fish that the people of the region depend on for food, we can all bet the Chinese could care less.
Here are some details from the article:

" Built by the Chinese state company Metallurgical Construction Corporation (MCC), the Ramu Nickel Mine has been plagued by land issues, labor disputes, and environmental concerns.

The Minister of Environment and Conservation, Thompson Harokaqueh, ordered the slurry pipeline shut-down, effectively shuttering the mine, while the government takes another look at the project. According to the company's agreement, the slurry pipeline was to be built at least 25 meters from the road and raised on steel supports, however on the ground inspection revealed that MCC upheld neither of these legal requirements."

Why the Chinese were given the 'get go green light' for this project is beyond me ... oh wait, I just figured it out ... payoffs - RIGHT !
ALWAYS SAD BUT TRUE!
Do you think the Papuan people (hope that's right) will protest?
Have they protested already? Can we add our voices to their with a petition - anyone? I'll sign anytime !

Of course it's controversial. Anyone with any sense and regard for life will oppose it and anyone with a taste for money will push forward with it. It's like the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.
