"According to scientists, changing the the continuously burning lights on the 6% of towers that are taller than 490 feet could result in a 45% reduction in mortality, or some 2.5 million birds." That's a good start, but just a start.

Signed with pleasure. The American Bird Conservancy has proposed safe siting and operating guidelines for these and for wind farms. yet the FCC, FAA and wind operators refuse to help!

Feral and domestic cats kill hundreds of millions of birds each year. [source: www.awea.org]
Power lines kill between 130 million -- 174 million [source: www.awea.org]
Windows (residential and commercial) 100 million -- 1 billion [source: www.treehugger.com]
Pesticides 70 million [source: www.awea.org]
Automobiles 60-80 million [source: www.awea.org]

ban cats, powerlines, and windows?

I think we need to start somewhere. First we need to eliminate feral cats by controlling the cat population. We are also trying to eliminate most pesticides mostly to protect our food sources, be nice to help both. Put decals on your windows to avoid the birds flying into them. Having the same problem with the wind turbines. They are trying to keep them out of the birds' paths. Be nice to not have to worry about more endangered species. I love to watch the birds in my yard. And I'd like tokeep them around.

Let's start with the idiotic, impractical, and frequently useless windmill farms that are supposed to produce "green energy". Those turkeys move and slice and dice more that a solid object that is stationary.

Signed. Our cell tower has an Osprey that's been making a nest on it for two years now. She's also successfully hatched out her babies because they fly for their practice runs over my house in the summer. I guess some other towers need improvement.

Sadly humans have created an unnatural world and animals get caught in our "progress". There are feral cats because people act irresponsibly and do not spay neuter but do dump them wherever it is convenient.. Cats hunt and there is an overpopulation of them but feral cats or cats in general have nothing to do with this and the plight of feral cats is not their fault so let's leave them out of this.
There are dangers in the world to animals but people have made it harder for birds and all animals by the superficial world. If we were really that smart we wouldn't need all these contraptions which create lethal situations for so many animals.

Solar Power, Wind Farms and Communication towers- WTF - Bake them! Chop them up, or hang them up to dry! Gives a whole new meaning to "Have It Your Way!" I forgot about tthe special toxic sauce they can drink before they take flight!! What are the odds, now?

Telecommunication towers are a concern for the health of humans and wildlife . It is pity that governments around the world are not more aware of this .

Can we just build something that is BOTH HUMANE TO ANIMALS AND THE EARTH!
too many humans on earth destroying everything.

When are we to understand that ALL WE DO IS INTER-CONNECTED?

No, No and No. How about we start regulating and controlling the House Cat population in the US, particularly no more protecting feral and stray cat populations and holding Pet cat owners responsible for their at large cats. The older studies put Migratory and Resident bird deaths from House cats at about 100 Million split 50/50 between Pet cats and feral/stray cats which meant that cats kill 17 times more birds than Comm. Towers. The new March 2011 study; in The Journal of Ornithology from the Smithsonian Institute, the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the American Bird Conservancy raises the number to 500 Million, half by Pet cats and half by feral/stray cats, which is 71 times the amount killed by the Comm. Towers. Personally I have no doubt that that the increase is due for the most part because of the increased Cat population in the US due to protection and feeding of feral/stray cat populations. If you actually want to save birds work on stopping the LARGEST Human Caused Source of bird deaths not the fifth which is where the Comm towers fall in the UN-NATURAL causes of bird deaths: #1 House cats pet, feral or stray at 500 million, #2 Land development according to the National Audubon Society, #3 Cars and Trucks at 100 million, #4 Agriculture 67 million, #5 Comm Towers 6-7 million.

l think more awareness is needed around the impact of our communications systems full stop!
Remember the canaries that were taken into the mines to detect when the atmosphere was toxic?
What does it tell us if birds are dying around our communications towers? Mmmm, could we also be being exposed to harmful vibrations? Or is my imagination just running away with me!
