Thailand, a major source of fish imported to the US, depends on slave labor. The accounts of ex-slaves, Thai fishing syndicates, officials, exporters and anti-trafficking case workers, illuminate an opaque offshore supply chain enmeshed in slavery.

Thanks Cal, Bringing this sort of thing to people's attention is the only way that we can hope that things will change. noted.

Is this the price consumers are prepared to pay for affordable products? The average person has no idea where most of the products come from and to be perfectly honest far less do they care.

This is outrageous. They are demanding to fish Australian waters including sancturies and species we have deemed as threatened under the pretext of feeding their population as their own waters are severely depleted, and now they're exporting these fish? And just why then, can they not pay these workers?

I still blame Nike for starting this. The first company to outsource the making of their products to Japan for cheap labor, cheaper than American workers, when the Japanese got uppity and demanded decent wages, benefits and limits on child labor, Nike packed up and has been hop skotching around the world ever since. And so many millionaire athletes wear that obscene swoosh. Minority athletes included. It can't be that they don't KNOW this because if they ever visited the mother ship they would see the University of Oregon students who picket that rathole of a company every day. And what has come of Nike's bold venture? Everyone does it now. And wonder of wonders, they've even found a way to pay nothing, just use slaves. That's business. And it is despicable.

This an an outrageous infraction of human rights and must end immediately If the governments concerned fail to respond, diplomatic pressure must be applied by the free nations of the world.

It is too sad. I am afraid that slavery tends to be the rule, not the exception. Only terms are different. Are we not all slaves to technology, instead of the other way round? In my country (Greece) we are almost all slaves to a government that cannot help us and to "friends" and "allies" who want us to work to death to pay high interests for loans, which interests are not given to their citizens. Hundreds of people have died through / because of the crisis and people work - when they find a job - for peanuts! Sorry if I sound onesided, but if only you could see how our life has deteriorated, you would see that slavery has already entered your neighborhood.
