Western lawmakers want to elevate the Plains bison to a status similar to that of the iconic bald eagle with legislation to declare the burly beasts America's "national mammal."

"The largely symbolic measure would provide no added protections for the estimated 20,000 wild bison in North America."

This actually sounds like a GREAT idea to me but, being America's "national mammal" needs to bring special protections to it as well!

A good idea. Bison are already largely American symbols.

Wait a minute--the article says it's backed by lawmakers from NEBRASKA? The same idiots who voted to allow hunting in national parks?

What are they up to now . . . ?

Noted, I COMPLETELY agree Shelly.

I hate to be cynical but this was signed by the same idiots in Montana and Wyoming who are not allowing the bison to roam their natural range because they MAY have a disease that MAY infect the precious cattle grazing on public lands that the bison should be grazing on. It's a great idea but it's just smoke and mirrors. If it makes their actions more transparent and they stop hazing the bison then I am all for it.

Call me a cynic but when they stop killing them then i will believe someone cares whether they are the "national mammal" or not.

okay, so will they now be killed for "religious" reasons now, and it's okay? they are definitely symbolic but may fall the same fate as the bald eagle...sorry another post causes me great concern over this.

Best to do is write to your Senators asking them to make the Bison a national mammal.

Bisons aka Buffalos are native to North America.

I am in favor of this.

Good idea then maybe our government will stop hazing and killing them and will get the damn cattle off our public lands so the buffalo can live in peace.

Are these the same senators that allow the bison to be shot and killed if they tread within a thousand miles of cattle that are grazing on public lands?!

It sounded great when I was reading the article but after seeing all your comments, I'm very confused. Could naming bison "national mammal" actually make things worse?

Its really hard to pick one animal, for me its between the BISON, MUSTANGS, AND THE WOLVES!!!

It would be great if that meant some protection for them, along with the wolves. Alas, I feel the real national animal has become the corporate jackal.

If you want to help the buffalo go to bfc-media@wildrockies.org

It will take you to everything Buffalo Field Campaign is doing
They are the only people that are actually on the ground and in the field trying to protect these creatures, and they need all the help they can get!!!!!

It may give them a chance to survive the ridiculousness. There are many petitions to save them out there.

The bison and wild horse need to both be national mammals. Hope this will help protect them from man.
