Hydro dams are often not a very green option. Solar thermal and wind power seem better, along with energy efficiency and energy conservation. I think that we humans also need to restrain our numbers and demands on nature, to allow wild nature and wildlife to survive.

Have you been to India? If you could see what they blithely toss into their rivers (even this one...the HOLY OF HOLIES) you'd never want to drink water again!
