Gun control activists say the Colorado shootings should be a wake-up call, but Americans' views on guns aren't swayed by individual tragedies, polls show. The candidates know that.

Not only do I believe the article to be correct, the southern states, Alaska, and the northern states would never go for it.

"Americans' views on guns aren't swayed by individual tragedies, polls show. The candidates know that." RepubliCONs would LOVE for Democrats to even mention Gun Control, it's the ONLY thing that Greedy One Percenters can gain ground with. Screw that! The States can take care of their own gun related laws.

The article is accurate. There will be no change in gun laws or accessability. The focus will remain on the de-ranged individuals.

No change in gun laws - it's an absolute with the NRA - so just go back inside and hope for the best.
Thanks Jim for your stats but the NRA doesn't think there is a problem, so guess we have to live with it. Gun ownership of a private one gun should be the only type we should have if we want one. These automatics and AK47's or whatever is the correct name(s) for these weapons is for the military, not personal use. Where are you, as a normal person going to do with these assault weapons. If a burgular comes into your home a hand gun does the job. At a Boston Shooting Gallery about 3 years ago, an 8 year old got killed handling an automatic fire arm, he dropped it, and it continued to fire and he was pronunced dead. When I suggested that it was the parent's fault to have such a young child work this, they jumped all over me as to 'it's their right to have arms." Well yes, but not an 8 year old. Someone else said, would you give the keys to the car to an 8 year old? Parents need to be smarter than to let kids get a hold of weapons.. like that 3 year old boy who killed his father..they were all watching TV and the 3 year old came out with a gun and fired killing his dad... against parents are responsible for not putting weapons out of reach of kids. But no, it's the parents' rights to have a gun I was told... don't bother blaming the parents, that's a "no, no".

Maybe the focus should just be Colorado. It seems that this state is the focus for this insanity.

Thanks Cal.

If people in the USA want to keep their firearms, why don't they try doubling the penatly for any crime, felony, misdemeanor, etc , if a firearm is involved? That firearm need not be used, just present.

Republicans are more interested in access to guns than women's access to birth control.

It may indeed become a topic that will be discussed but will anything really change? The NRA and the government are far too good friends.

WELL IT IS THE AQUARIAN AGE AFTER ALL, SO YES, GUN CONTROL NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IN THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OF 2012. ASSAULT WEAPONS NEED HEAVY DUTY CONTROLS. YEARS AGO.
GUN FREEDOM WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITY IS NOT FREEDOM. IT IS GUN INSANITY.

Give up your freedoms and you will not have some items for self-defense when there is no person to defend you. It is not the weapon that is the problem. It is people who need to be caught before they think of doing a crime -- like people need to be given their real lives back -- from the extra money in the weapons fund -- that is forceing people with alot of good in the middle class into the lower class, from the lower class onto the streets, and from the upper class to the middle class? PLEASE DO SOME THINKING ABOUT HOW TO TURN THIS AROUND --LIKE BUY LAND TOGETHER BEFORE YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBOR UNEXPECTDELY AND FOR NO REASON LOOSE YOUR JOBS. PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE CLASS HAVE BEEN TELLING ME HOW THEY LOST THEIR WORK FOR NO REAL REASON. THE NEW FANGLED REASONS -- ARE NOT REASON TO MY MIND.
HOMESTEAD.
PLEASE WILL SOME NICE RICH PERSON BUY GOOD LAND AND LET US -- HAVE A PLACE TO HOMESTEAD ON. THANKS.

THE EARLY AMERICAN MILITIA: TYRANY FROM A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO IMPOSE THIER LAWS ON EARLY AMERICA -- OR THE 13 COLONIES. SOUND LIKE MODERN DAY PEOPLE NEED TO PREVENT TYRANY FROM A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO WANT TO IMPOSE THEIR LAWS ON US???
I ADVOCATE PEACEFUL MEANS.

Parvez that is not what early Amercan History was about. They had to fight a certain group of people who came over to early America and tride to rule them and take away their freedoms. It is hard to understand unless we all go study the original copies of the documents and theORIGINAL history. to you it maysound lje taliban--however it is not. WE CHOOSE FIRST AND ALMOST ALWAY TO SOLVE SITUATIONS PEACEDFULLY.

As much as is possible settle all things peacefully. Speak things out one with another again and again and again -- as much as it takes.

My answer: I hope so. It's time to stop the sale of rapid fire guns at least.

While anyone with 1/2 a brain can clearly understand the need to ban assault rifles and expand background checks, the real issue here is far more pervasive than gun ownership. The real problem is a reflection of society as a whole, and the continuing division/polarization that is occurring. All of this finger-pointed and taking sides is continuing to destroy our country at an unprecedented level...which is exactly what the 1% want. They know that divided, we are much easier to control and manipulate. This allows them to continue to get away with robbing up blind, slashing our wages/benefits, and slashing their own tax rates. The just continue to get all of us peons arguing over inane and trite issue like abortion and gun control while they laugh all the way to the bank. Not a single person wants to discuss the real problem here, the first victim of all of these mass shootings is the attacker. They are often marginalized by society, constantly harassed, teased, or ignored, merely for being different, and often socially awkward. Instead of us embracing diversity and trying to reach out to these people, we prefer to feel better about ourselves by putting them down. Many of these sociopaths were not created overnight, nor were they destined to become murderers, rather, a lifetime of suffering and loneliness were the spark that ignited that fury. Until we learn to get along with each other and quite spreading the fans of hatred and intolerance, these events will continue and multiply.

AR15's & other assault guns are not the same as handguns to help homeowners protect themselves from intruders. They are not the same as hunting rifles or sporting rifles. These weapons are designed for harm and death on big scales, so why would ANYONE outside the military want or need them?

It would seem that no tragedy is tragic enough to convince the NRA that it is wrong. As long as they are funding elections, the gun laws aren't likely to change.
