Regarding Obama's stance on the issue, Moore feels the President is the leader on gun control issues, and even praised his speech following James Holmes' shooting spree. However, during his recent appearance on "Piers Morgan Tonight", Moore attempted to t

Michael Moore is right of course. The world has changed. People's guns are of no use if there should be a totalitarian, rogue government that was terrorizing the people. However those guns are used for 30000 gun murders every year in America. For shame! If the number of guns were to radically diminish, so would the number of murders. Guns are such phallic symbols giving the shooters feelings of potency and such a feeling of relief when they are discharged! I'm sure that is one of the chief reasons why Americans hang on to their guns so strongly. They should know that they are not so poorly endowed that they need guns to make them adequate.
Other methods of murder are not so handy; more troublesome and require more time for preparation and so reflection and reconsideration may come to the rescue of both the murderer and the victim.

I don't often agree with Mr Moore but this time I fully concur. Obama is always toothless when it matters.

If we all had jobs, this wouldn't be escalating. No to fear, people. The right would LOVE to talk guns, fear and freedoms.

Republicans LET the assault weapon ban expire.

In 1994, Congress passed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban--set to expire in 2004. Due to intense "lobbying" by the NRA to members of Congress of both parties, it was allowed to lapse in 2004. Care2 has a petition for this and some Dem. members of Congress are working to reinstate this ban. We must all contact our elected members with our support. After all, hunters don't need assault weapons.

Thanks Cal--surely the aim is to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. The current system in the USA does not seem to achieve those goals.

He's right though, no one will touch the topic, because both of them only care about getting elected

There is no way you will get any candidate in an election year to come out in favor of gun control. That candidate would lose the deep South the moment the statement left his lips.

In Canada they have a 65% lower homicide rate from guns than the U.S. (we would save 5000-10000 lives/year if we had their rate). Canadians ban pistols and assault rifles for the general public unless they get a special license that requires a lot of background checks. Their homicide rate dropped significantly in 1978 ... one year after increasing the licensing requirements for rifles (check Canadian gun control on wikipedia) ... and continued to decrease over the years. I guess people could argue that a gun is needed if someone comes after you with a knife ... but ... I believe that concealed weapons (pistols) are not allowed outside the home right now unless you have a special permit ... so a normal rifle should be fine for any common defense that an U.S. citizen feels is necessary. I vote for saving the 5000 - 10000 lives per year and the multitudes of injured people and medical costs by banning pistols and assault rifles. I am quite certain that the gun manufacturers do not agree. Their jobs would be lost and they will fight vigorously to keep their job. Makes sense for them but not for me. One vote per person right? Or does big money talk louder and manipulate the facts?
