What began as bizarre bird behavior has turned into something out of a horror film for threatened whales in Argentina, where seagulls have learned that pecking at the whales' backs can get them a regular seafood dinner.

Wow this article is great for highlighting the lack of all foresight which seems to be a predominant human quality. How SAD and sickening. Thank you for posting.

o, yes, save the whales from the seagulls so the Japanese can kill them.

Hypocrites, they aren't concerned about whales, they are concerned about their tourism dollars. Lead ammunition is going to create yet another environmental problem.

Unfortunately gulls quickly learn from each other and this behavior can spread over the whole world. Maybe there can be some way of scaring them off before they have their "seafood" dinner?

I hate to see one species put against another but the gull population seems to have become invasive.

So sad. Feel very sorry for the whales. The gulls too if they are going to shoot them. They are worried about their tourism industry more than the whales if you ask me though. Sadly noted. Thx for posting Cal.

Eco tourism is big business for people to learn about protecting Earth resources (Whales, Fish, etc). Major Fishing companies (Europe, Asia, and USA) is major problems because they dump leftover fish parts into sea because some fishing vessel have cleaning stations (Saw a documentation about illegal fishing at http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/pirate-fishing/ you can see at the end where show cleaning station). Whales are being victimized by sea gulls because they toll left overs from around the world (From Sierra Leon to Argentine, as well as USA and Asia). Argentina need to be educated people in poverty.

Unfortunately we can't always have it our way. Save the whales I agree with and gulls too are living entities; much as we might despise them. Alexandra hit the nail on the head. Birds are very smart and pass learned behaviors on to the next generation. Cleaning up the mess of the dumps is one issue. Teaching humans about recycling and their environment another. Unfortunately the gulls will have to be culled back by culling the rookeries. Ask any farmer whose field has been devastated by an overabundance of birds; or the Australian home owner whose roof or wiring has been chewed apart by the humungous flocks of budgerigars. Now it's save the gulls well you try being a whale when your back is being pecked to pieces.
Nature abhors a vacuum but it also demands a balance. Perhaps it's time for the humans to be culled; but let's start at the top of the species as there seems to be a lot of intellectual flotsam and jetsam clogging our development and interfering with the global planetary health.

I really fell sorry for the whales, but I don't think killing the seagulls is the solution...

This is a very sad situation, but I am not sure that shooting the seagulls is the answer. Thanks Cal

Again that humans created to problem and then decided to kill more animals to "solve" the problem. Why don't shoot whaler to save whale?

Gulls, inland here, regularly scavenge dropped food trash in parking lots and dumpsters. Give them birth control?

Oh Whales, I know we can stop this yet another attack on you.

Create jobs worldwide cleaning up humans trash would be a good start.

Noted, Thank you Cal.

Yeah because the real threat to whales are the seagulls, not humans. Gee and to think we've been focusing in stopping Japan and Iceland from killing whales while all the time the real enemy has been living in all our shores! Shoot the Japanese whaling fleet instead. Shooting seagulls is not a solution

I also have seagulls inland who are aggressive even with each other. Humans recycle properly or we'll recycle you...
