Most importantly, humane education strives to establish a sense of responsibility, making the world a better, more humane place. Our children ARE the future.

excellent. How about a course in veganism, not just keeping caged animals a little more comfortable.

I have to disagree with this..Not because it isn't important..And yes..children should indeed be introduced to it..
However..I think it is up to the parents..not the school..They already have their hands quite full with simply trying to teach the curriculum they have now..

Shortest of teachers..over crowded classrooms..cut programs..With that situation it is already difficult for both the teachers and students..Many schools have been cut for art and music programs..So I don't think this is either the responsibility of the school and or anything that belongs there..

Parents need to instill this in their children..and to do so at the earliest age possible..

Thanks Dee. Well said. Unfortunately parents who morally and spiritually bankrupt and inept at raising dust clouds let alone children are at an all time high.

Also those who are not involved in education or are educators themselves are unaware of the fact that STATES determine what curriculum is taught, NOT THE FEDS. This changed recently with the implementation of anti-bullying programs but with none else.

STATES set the agenda for curriculum. It's up to individual teachers to implement animal welfare issues into their lesson plans. Many animal welfare organizations provide teachers with lesson plans, realia, and posters.

But I cannot understand the lack of support for the most universal truth regarding education: IT TAKES A VILLAGE. IF THE PARENTS ARE FAILING THEIR CHILDREN, THE GOVERNMENT IS FAILING CHILDREN, AND THE STATES ARE FAILING CHILDREN WITH UNDERFUNDING AND OTHER DEBACLES SUCH AS OVER-SIZED CLASSROOMS, NO TEACHER SUPPORT AND SUBSTANDARD SUPPLIES AND BUILDINGS, THEN WHO THE HELL THINKS TEACHERS ARE GOING TO SINGLE-HANDEDLY TURN THINGS AROUND!?!?!?! EDUCATORS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM WITH EDUCATION!!!!!!

I'm done. Thanks for allowing me to vent a little.

I so agree with this. Children must be taught about animal welfare and how to treat them. They have to learn to respect them.If they learn about animal rights while they are young, then they grow up to become responsible, enlightened adults. Animal abuse will then reduce drastically! I hope this gets mandatory in every school.

as a parent, grandparent, greatgrandparent - and as an educator - i can attest to the woeful lack of ANY biology program at the elementary level in most schools. basic respect for life - including their own - is inculcated in the process of caring for and learning about animals, and how very much like people they are.
