The business of prison work was for a long time a fairly low-key affair, and there wasn't a lot of competition. But then around the millennium clients started giving their business to firms in Eastern Europe

Whee haa! Who built the Autobahn? Maybe it is more humane than making criminals veg doing nothing, especially in solitary confinement when they are sound of body. Remember the aged woman in The Exodus?

Good idea, inmates being busy and still able to think about their future, feeling useful and may be even learning, and really the " made in Germany" label has always been a positive label!i guess they get payed for their work, good news to my point :)

I like the idea of the prisoners only getting so much of their pay and the rest being banked for when they re-enter society.

makes sense to me. They didn't call prison "the stir" for nothing. Sitting around=stir crazy. So much for the tough guy "gangsta" personna that many young men try to act tough. It's not about 24/7 of pumping up muscles, it's looking over your shoulder for whoever/whatever comes next.
At least in Germany they are giving the more intelligent criminals an alternative to coming out a loser.

I think it's a wonderful idea. We should find out if this could work in the US. I imagine many prisoners would want to work rather than sit around. It's a win, win situation for everyone.

We used to do that in South Africa with our prisoners in the apartheid days, now that the ANC have taken over the prisons are overflowing with criminals and they sit around watching TV and doing nothing.

I saw a report that some US government contracts are going to prisons now too.

I like them working, paying restitution to their victims and the cost of living in that prison. In america they send victims to wasting away jails, mental illness sudden onset, and university of violence prisons. Pity the Prisoner in Amerika. Like rape, it is the murder of one's soul. Having a job keeps men and women healthy, gives them hope and something to look forward to. Then they can put them all in the army and teach them to be assassins. Sorry for the snarkyness. It is a good story with a lot of merit.

It is a good initiative that should be followed because it is a way to reintegrate prisoners into society.

this is a great idea we already use prisoners to train service dogs an care for the forgotten stray cats and kittens until they find a forever home an what I read it is good for the prisoners an for the animals so why not have it say "MADE IN THE U.S.A." again made by prisoners it will give them training a skill like welding computer programming an yes I want to see made in the U.S.A. again I am sick of all the junk coming into this country made in china an I mean JUNK I am a welder an got some welding rods made in china open the box an they wore falling apart. =^..^=

We also need lots more men for the forces God Bless them for keeping us safe good idea to give the prisoners training also some self worth and patriotism. Perhaps if they had learned to love and respect their country they would not be in the prison in the first place.
There is a saying "If you do not love and respect your country you will never love and respect yourself " so true

Apart from learning skills and having something to do is better than sitting in a cell. I think this will make them better people and chances of reoffending are lower. And it will also help the tax payer.
